I need to do something as I've gained a stone in the last sixth months - all around the belly which apparently isn't good for an old duffer like me.

The problem is I like my food too much and my wife is an excellent cook!

I need to up the exercise!

I've got a fitbit one and it's agreat device for logging your activity and setting targets.

Does anyone else on here have one?

I damaged my knee last summer which has made exercise more problematic. I have only been abke to anything for the last couple of months and even then my gym routine is restricted.

Mr gee40 and I are doing Dry January... and have also banned eating out and take aways for January and it's having a very positive effect on our girths. I just have to try not to undo it all at BETT next week.

So, for the first time in my life I am joining in on the healthy eating to lose weight thing... My weight has been slowly creeping up over the past year and a half, I've put on 15kg (2.3 stone) in that time . Which granted, isn't that much to some. But since I am short that has moved me from inside the "healthy weight" bmi to the "obese" section, which has scared me! Also I'm at the point where I will need to buy a whole new wardrobe of clothes which I cannot afford!

So time to lose it.

Not doing very much exercise just now as my ankle has been playing up again, but went to the doctors last week and have now been referred to physio for it.

Basically I am just counting calories just now. I like my food and tend to eat reasonable healthy anyway. We do lack portion control in our house though which is the main issue I think!

Does anyone have any tips for some tasty low calorie dinners? Breakfast and lunch I can do lots of things on low calories, but I am really struggling with finding nice dinners that are not really high in calories. Everywhere seems to suggest omelettes, which I cannot eat since eggs make me ill. Eggs in things are fine though (weird, I know).

wholewheat pasta, spicy peso and salmon.

I had this last night (except with pasta sauce because I forgot to buy pesto!!). Salmon from Sainsburys was in a sweet chilli sauce. All in all took less than 20 mins to make too. Add some broccoli for extra greenage :)

ok...If you like a fry up, here is my winner! :)

Bacon - Get back bacon and trim the fat from it. Fry with no oil until the bacon is cooked through, then drain on kitchen paper, then grill until crispy

Eggs - Poach them, simple as. Fried eggs are a big no no, but poached are perfectly fine - If you can't eat eggs, then don't have them.

Beans - Have half a tin per person, cook in a ramekin under the grill

Tomatoes - Go nuts, but grill them rather than fried.

Mushrooms - Go nuts, but again, grill them rather than fry

1 Medium potato - cubed. Par boil, then grill until crisp

Enjoy - This is perfectly fine on slimming world as a good breakfast (but not to be had daily).

A nice Chilli Con Carne (courtesy of slimming world).

1 large onion, finely chopped

3 garlic cloves, finely chopped

500g lean beef mince (5% fat or less)

2 tsps ground cumin

1 tsp ground coriander

1-2 tsp cayenne pepper or paprika

1 red pepper and 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and roughly chopped

400g can chopped tomatoes

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

400g tin of red kidney beans in chilli sauce

400g can mixed beans, drained

350g dried long-grain rice

Place a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and stir-fry for 1-2 minutes, then add the spices and mince and stir-fry for 5-6 minutes.

Add the tomatoes and peppers and bring to the boil over a high heat. Season to taste, cover lightly and cook over a low heat for 20 minutes.

Add the beans, stir well and cook for a further 10 minutes. Meanwhile cook the rice according to the packet instructions, drain and keep warm.

Divide the chilli and rice between bowls and serve with a chunky salad, if you like. Eat and enjoy!

Thanks for the recipes :D The chilli sounds like a good idea, not had that in a while! And I guess I should swap out my normal pasta for wholewheat, I do love my pasta.

Hi @arwen Well done on making the choice to try and lose some weight :-)

Our best purchase for making meals has been a slow cooker. Chuck in a bit of meat, loads of vegetables, some herbs, tin of chopped tomatoes, maybe a tin of beans/a few potatoes and turn on as you walk out the door and you've got a good filling, healthy meal sat ready for you when you get home from work. If you don't eat it all, then you can freeze what's left over and you've got a healthy ready meal for when you haven't got time to cook or forget to do the slow cooker :-) Other than that, we make very large batches of Bolognese sauce, chilli etc and freeze loads of portions of those as well. Lakeland sell freezer tubs which stack easily and hold a good portion as well. Don't be tempted to put yourself into full blown "diet mode" though and think you can live off salad. Your body still needs calories to function and even reducing your calorie intake to 1800/2000 a day you will see good results.

Best of luck with it :-)

According the wii fit i lost 4lbs in two days....it seems to fluctuate massively though. ..the pattern is a zigzag

Weight varies throughout the day as well as from day to day. You should weigh yourself once a week max, preferably at roughly the same time of day each time, so that you can see the trend inyour weight.

I have shed 7lb since Christmas through sensible eating, dry January and exercise. Heaven only knows what the BETT diet has done for me. On my feet all day, trying to stay off the stand supply of hobnobs (freely available to anyone) and restricting my pizza intake... damage limitation!

Great work everyone

Does anyone have any exercise tips for a guy with a bad knee.

So far the diet and no drinking is going ok, but feel I need to do more exercise to push the weight loss further.

How bad is said bad knee? low impact like cycling and swimming?

@elsiegee40 the wii shouts at me if i don't do the body test everyday ha. i do it every time when i get home from work.... we shall see how it goes, always more difficult when you can;t exercise much....

After my problems gaining weight when I was younger (when I moved to Minehead, my weight as 9 1/2 stone - which considering I'm 6' 3" tall, was ridiculous), I managed to switch around to being too heavy! So, since I moved house on 21st Jan, I have lost a total of 1 stone in weight! Thanks to my housemates who cook sensible portion sizes for meals! :D

Target weight is about 12 1/2 stone. Currently at 14 1/2 stone.

Discharged from physio a couple of days ago, been told to steadily build up exercise, went for a 4.4mile walk, with some light jogging in parts (probably only about 0.3 miles worth)

already paying for it today but hopefully a step in the right direction :D

@Tesla

Don't overdo it! Maybe some lighter stuff - swimming, the rowing machine?

I am hoping to start a weights regime in the next couple of weeks. My poor arthritic feet will not allow more than two classes so I might do a third cardio on the rower as well

Managed to lose 1 stone since January which I'm pretty happy about. I've started jogging again but forgotten how much of a toll it can take on the body. Managed to do 10k last week but my ankle has been sore all weekend. I've got my first ever 10k race on Sunday in Milton Keynes so anxious about being ready for that. I don't know if I should leave it be til the race or put in a few short runs this weeks to prepare :/

Well just did the MK Run and survived the entire distance! Did it in 1.13.25 which is just under a minute off my training 10k runs so happy with that. Thought I was in all sorts of trouble after the first 2k when my ankle was killing me (my fault I think for not doing my usual jobs for a warm up) but powered through and eventually got into my rhythm. Bloody big hill at the end to finish off the race. Without that reckon I'd have hit the 1.13 \ 1.12 mark. Next stop I have a half marathon lined up for December. Might take a week off first though lol.

Very well done!

A December Marathon sounds rather painful... breathing in very cold air can do all sorts of damage :-/ Where abouts is it?

As for me, I seem to be able to lose 2-3kg easily one week, then put it on again over the next 2 weeks or so. Even though I don't think I am doing anything different. Thinking I am going to need to start writing everything I eat so I can see what is going on.

Got my first physio assessment tomorrow so hopefully they can give me some exercises to fix my ankle and tell me if I should be staying away for certain activities that make it sore currently.

Down another 3 lbs for me. Not too bad! My main problem is that, due to illness, everything tires me out (to the extent that getting dressed now makes me tired), so exercise knocks me back loads. Went for a 3 1/2 mile walk on Saturday - I had to sleep for 4 hours after to recover!
