Tesla Posted November 16, 2014 Posted November 16, 2014 Well at least you know now. Achilles injuries take a long time to heal which at least explains why you have been having so much trouble. I have naturally very short achilles tendons- I used to struggle to put my feet flat on the floor first thing in the morning and I cannot crouch down with my heels on the floor. I have always been told to be very very careful as achilles injuries are the devil to heal. I know someone who tore theirs, was in a hip to ankle cast for 12 weeks and the day after the cast came off he stumbled down a couple of stairs and did it again So please give it time and be very careful I shall. it's very frustrating as i have been pretty much injured since July.
elsiegee40 Posted November 16, 2014 Author Posted November 16, 2014 I shall. it's very frustrating as i have been pretty much injured since July. I have a patella tracking problem in my knee that came to the fore in July and has put me in the same frustrating position. It's a long slow haul doing exercises to strengthen muscles so that my kneecap moves straight and without pain
Hawkeyez Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 I've got achalasia too - you don't hear a lot about it do you? Its a bit of a pain though, isn't it! It is atm, pretty much every solid or fluid intake is a gamble. Can't take my reflux meds with cold water anymore. No longer enjoy eating. Got appointment to see surgeon next Monday, when hopefully be given okay to get operated on. Which operation did you have? How are you now with it? I have read on support forums, that, suffers still have some foods they avoid, but can at least enjoy eating again.

It's a long slow haul doing exercises to strengthen muscles so that my kneecap moves straight and without pain that sucks. Docs said i have to go back in 2 weeks and then they'll refer me to physio. The most annoying part of it all is (as stupid as it sounds) generally it doesn't hurt, so right now and even running up a set of stairs it feels fine. Felt like a bit of an idiot at the docs because pretty much everything she did, it didn't hurt my foot.
Joanne Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 Too right... I did a long post on Facebook after my first "cheat weekend"... Day 35: It's amazing what a difference a month can make. This time last month, I was polishing off my T-Bone steak with chips, having downed my 6 piece buffalo wing starter, to be followed by ice cream sundae all washed down with at least 3 cans of soft drink and then ending the evening with some more crisps and chocolate. I spent the whole of September craving another binge session of Me vs Food and when cheat day finally arrived, I was ready to take on the world starting with that ice cream sundae. 4 spoonfuls in, I started to feel rather sick. Not wanting to put a downer on my cheat day & the fact that I paid in excess of £7 for that mammoth beast of ice cream and chocolate madness, I persevered until I couldn't do anymore only because the ice cream had melted. When it came to the main meal and a quarter of the way through my chicken burger and chips drenced in chilli sauce and mayonnaise with the odd speck of yellow residue from the oil dripping off the carb laden fried potato, it dawned on me, that after putting my body through the torture of fat, oil and god knows what other crap for 16+ years, it's decided that after treating it right for 1 month, it's time to fight back. I don't need the daily can of Boost to keep me going through the day. I don't need the chocolate fix every break, after lunch and dinner. This weekend, I've actually missed the grilled chicken and that green stuff otherwise known as vegetables. I'm not saying I'll never eat another chocolate or never touch another chicken burger, but I've passed a big personal milestone, in that I know, that junk food isn't what defines me anymore and that I can do things in moderation without fear of the floodgates opening. I can and probably will crave something bad every now and then, but that doesn't mean I need to get that fix as soon as possible! It's not a diet, it's a lifestyle change, and you know what, being healthy and knowing you are doing the right thing is a damn good feeling! I'm in a similar situation. I went to a local burger diner and I felt so sick after eating the burger (which tasted delicious) that it has put me off going again really. I've also noticed that I taste sweet a lot more easily because the sugar intake is low now. I can eat weetabix without sugar, which I would have really struggled with before!

I have read on support forums, that, suffers still have some foods they avoid, but can at least enjoy eating again. I've had it stretched a few times - but the risk of a tear increases with each time they do that (and a tear is REALLY bad news) - and the effects didn't last long. As I can live with it - I don't want to have the cut done as it leaves you with bad permanent reflux. I've cut out the more fibrous veg and fruit and the harder to swallow meat (shame!) and find I can mostly get along if I'm sensible - eating little and often and regurging if necessary ~(ugh). I found that fizzy drinks help things along, so I drink a lot of diet coke. I had been misdiagnosed for years and only found out when I was admitted for a different problem and they nearly drowned me with a nasal feed tube - deep joy! The endoscopies are a laugh (not!), and I guess my throat is pretty knackered now, but we stagger on... Oh - for the reflux meds - insist on the oro-disp lansoprazole which dissolves on the tongue - I could never swallow those capsules - they don't seem keen to prescribe the dissolvable tabs (sweet strawberry type flavour) - they must cost more - but I was given some in hospital and they were a revelation! Good luck with yours 1

Just skip the bun next time the chips too! Five guys offer bunless burgers and wrap them in lettuce for ya. It's my kryptonite! Edited November 18, 2014 by tommej
Joanne Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 I think it was the grease and the cheese that did it for me. And maybe those GINORMOUS onion rings!! I really shouldn't be talking about food like that on this thread.... YAY GRILLED CHICKEN!

Yeah, I couldn't do Weetabix, Oatabix or porridge before without sugar. Now I can do the whole lot and not think twice about sugar. Tea without sugar is still unthinkable though, but luckily I'm not a serial tea drinker! Dates really do help with the sugar cravings though.
Joanne Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 I like to munch on green and blacks 85% organic dark chocolate... satisfies me every time!

Good luck with yours Thanks a lot for that. I will ask about the meds, as it would be a lot easier to have them. I have my appointment Monday night, and hoping to get options then. The chap that did my tests in August that confirmed it, said the bot-ox and the stretch options are short-term. I'm at the stage now, I don't care if the reflux gets bad again (better since decaf tea), I just want to be able to eat and drink without it being a drama. Its hard on my wife and step-daughter too. I can see it in their eyes when I'm struggling. My step daughter is looking forward to me getting "well", as she realizes, I just don't have the energy at the moment to do the normal fatherly stuff (running around park... being jumped on etc) Was you offered the cut? or just offered the stretch?

No, they've not offered it and I've not asked (after reading about the after effects - as far as I can tell - if they cut, pretty much you can't lie down flat to go to sleep, as your stomach contents just flow back up your throat, though maybe its improved since I was looking) - hopefully I can put it off. As I say - I did have to reorganise my approach to eating - but it works for me - about 15 years since diagnosis now. All the best for Monday - let me know how it goes.
Tesla Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 that sucks. So got my follow up appointment tomorrow. ankle is still roughly the same as it was before. Bought a new set of trainers which has helped slightly. Generally ok, but can;t do anything physical/ point my toes towards the floor with my leg out straight (which hasn't improved at all). Hurt it the other day getting into the shower, which was surprising, as I hadn't hurt it like that for a couple of weeks
featured_spectre Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 I've signed up to slimming world last week, first thing they said is that they recognise that I have an addiction to soft drinks and have advised rather than do away with them completely to start with, go for the zero/max options and wean myself off. already had a 2kg drop in weight from switching since switching the drinks, so its a good start
Tesla Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 I'm assuming you did other things than just stop drinking the full versions of those drinks to lose 2kg? or are they really that bad for you lol. Well done though . I want to lose weight desperately, but being unable to have exercised since my car accident in July make's it difficult.
featured_spectre Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 literally changed from drinks like Dr Pepper and Coke to Pepsi Max Cherry and Coke Zero, no other changes just yet.
pooley Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Well done all those sticking with it. I have fallen off the exercise / healthy eating band wagon completely. I'm just hoping I can get my head back into it after xmas!! I have a couple of 70+ mile cycle rides in May/June and i'd rather not be dragging 16st+ around with me lol.
Tesla Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 literally changed from drinks like Dr Pepper and Coke to Pepsi Max Cherry and Coke Zero, no other changes just yet. Crikey. I'm surprised. I generally don't drink as much fizz as i used to, but i probably still drink too much. (I'm currently drinking a Lucozade Energy Orange flavour) But i have been ill so
Iain.Faulkner Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Well done on signing up @nephilim :-) Good luck with it. I've seen a lot of stories of people who switch to diet drinks and drop weight quickly initially, I think it depends on how much you drink, but so called "full fat" coke and other soft drinks are really just empty calories.
witch Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 There are 139 calories in a can of coke which is quite a lot when you consider that an average man should have around 2,500 calories a day.

Hurt it the other day getting into the shower, which was surprising, as I hadn't hurt it like that for a couple of weeks Doctor was puzzled with the symptoms of pain i described. She's now booked me in for a blood test, an x-ray, and is refering me to physio. She also said it may be something related to arthritis, which is worrying. Yay.
TechSupp Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 There are 139 calories in a can of coke which is quite a lot when you consider that an average man should have around 2,500 calories a day. Eeek, been using the MyFitnessPal app mentioned on here and I'm on 1500 cals a day, not that bad to achieve but you got to watch out for things like that which is a good point. Lost 8lbs so far in a month just watching portion size mainly and not changing what I eat hardly at all. Logging it all makes you more aware of what you absentmidedly eat. Easy at moment as off work with a bike accident and can only have mushed up food so thats greatly helping to stop snacks etc!

You might need a CT or an MRI though - X-rays aren't the best for that. Maybe it's a redhead thing?
Tesla Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 She wants to check for various things.... To be honest it was quite difficult to understand what she was saying....and i don't mean because she was using terms i didn't understand. Just hope the physio might be able to shed light on it, if it isn't anything arthritic.
