Robunta Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 Hi there, I'm just wondering if many edugeek members use second life? Has anybody found any useful work-related resources? I've heard there is a UK Education Island with an NAACE virtual lounge although I've yet to visit it! I think second life could be a good opportunity to put together a collection of resources and interest groups and I can see a real benefit in attending conferences and meetings in second life - would save time, money and there's the 'green' benefit! Are there any plans to give edugeek a home on second life?
TechMonkey Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 The problem I have is what can be done there that can't be done easier or more open with current tools all ready available. Also can you filter the more interesting aspects of SL like you can the web. Plus from what I hear if you were to get too many people turning up to the conference or resource it would crawl to a halt or get laggy.

TechMonkey Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 Me too, it does seem like a lot of PR guff has shot it to the forefront so it seems like the 'Next Big Thing©®' I also have to chuckle that they quote member numbers of 15 squillion but when you ever look at the counter on their website it normally reads a few thousand at anyone time if that! A friend has a great sig that says somethign along the lines of "You don't have much of a first life so why would I want to interact with you in your Second Life"

I've only used it a couple of time and it has crashed on me once or twice due to hardware acceleration issues which I can't get round without turning it off (v annoying) but I didn't find the experience that offensive and I can think of lots of things that could work well in the environment... I've just yet to find many!

I've had an account for about a year after the BBC said they'd bought an island for Virtual Concerts (but I've never found it :oops: ) I'm all for giving a meeting a go but we'd need a sad person (sorry, I mean expert in Second Life ) to organise it and guide us novices to where its held otherwise we'll never find each other) Anyone fancy volunteering? regards Simon

It's horrid...i signed up and tried it and then never used it again. I hate games...i have no time for games...they are unproductive and just serve to p*ss me off because i'm no good at them. I have a 4U rack of cisco network kit and 4 servers to entertain me...why do i need some online game? lol
