Little-Miss Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 I don't consider myself to be as good as your guys when it comes to IT. I know enough to keep our little network chugging along day after day. But this week has made me feel a complete and utter failure. Starting to wonder whether i want to do this for the rest of my life now.....starting to lose patience (and confidence) with it all. *sits in the corner feeling sorry for herself*

I've now switched schools, and am enjoying it much more again.....the change of scenery has really done wonders for me :-) 1

I've felt like a fraud for most of the stuff I've spouted for a long time, but one day you'll see a question asked here and, halfway through typing your answer out, suddenly realise you know far more than you give yourself credit for. Once you sort this GPO/GPP weirdness - which I really can't work out, not without seeing your system first hand - you'll fly through the rest of the problems and make an enormous amount of progress in one week. There are bad weeks and good weeks. If this one has been bad, you're due a good one soon. (Probably the one starting the 24th... ) 1

SYNACK Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 (edited) I'm sure we all have those kinds of days/weeks. I have had those where stuff like hardware keeps breaking or random little/big issues are piling up. It all seems to happen at once to like a bad batch of PSUs going thanks to a large spike and the net being unstable at the same time thanks to provider glitches along with bad updates messing all over the place (thanks Adobe). Glaze over and keep hacking at it and you'll get through. It does make you reassess things though and keeps you focused on learning new things so you can escape in future if nessisary. difinity Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Chin up Little-Miss managing a network on your own, however big or small is no small task. I can think of techs with years of experience that would struggle to do such a thing. 1

When I look at some of the professional stuff that some people on here do, and then look at the hodge-podge of oddities and peculiarities on my network I question if I'm up to it. Its just part of the job I think! Its also what drives me to do better too. 1

One question they asked, they gave me four options. I had only heard of one. I guessed. Six months later I had learnt a bit more and thought "whew! that was a lucky guess, can't believe I got that right!" Six months after that, I found out I hadn't got it right. (where would you set a password policy in a 2003 domain, FWIW - I said OU, but it was domain ) I actually feel largely competent now - I'm a quick learner, luckily - but there are still things I see talked about on here and all my brain hears is the white noise of an analog TV tuned to a dead channel. 1

If you know everything your brain would be spread across your office walls and you would be a very boring person (if you were still alive!).

All about the networks, how the systems connected, and how to support the small range of applications. You could know everything. Now, you haven't got a chance. Many days are like treading water. Look at where you have been and how much you have got done in the last year, bet you have got more done that some. Least its the weekend, have a relaxing weekend and come back to it with a fresh head on Monday. 1

I think a large proportion of IT is bluffing until you can find the answer, it's only the big headed that think it is all skill. One of the first things my boss said to me here is we can't know everything about IT so shouldn't expect to and anyone that says they do is lying. If you try your head will explode Enjoy your weekend, do something non-tech and enjoyable and come back fresh Monday and post up your issues. Some smart arse will have the answer 1
