Problems copying CD contents

I've tried to copy the contents of our Rising Stars ICT CD's onto a Network drive.

 

I've copied them retaining the directory structure. Stored in a folder in our Staff Common area.

 

I can load the first part up which is basically a flash page organising the documents. Problem is when i click the documents, it says it cant find the folder.

 

Any ideas? Never had this issue before...

Does it work if you map a network drive to the Rising Stars folder root and run it from there?

net use r: \\server\share\risingstarsfolder ?

 

You're testing to see if the developer has made dumb/lazy assumptions regarding paths.

A site licence is included in the purchase of this Switched On ICT CD-ROM.

A school is allowed to run their CD-ROM on as many machines as is required, and also to copy the contents of the CD-ROM to local or networked drives as required within the site....

The developer has made assumptions about paths that aren't sensible in 2012 (or even 2000 for that matter), I suspect. His app is (probably) looking for DriveLetter:\FolderRoot\DirectoryStructureBlah and so when it's run from \\server\sharename\software\risingstars or whereever it falls over because it can't find it.

 

Your next test (if you haven't already done so) is to see what happens if you map r: \\server\share\subfolders\risingstars to see if it's that it doesn't handle UNC paths / there's something preventing execution via unc paths.

The software is expecting all files to stem from the root of the drive not a sub folder.

Hi there Little-Miss did you manage to find a solution to the problem as this is also currently my problem Mine works through a mapped drive, though don't really want to use a mapped drive to run the software. Any ideas? Many thanks

Going to resurrect this one. Just copied the New Switched On Computing to the server shared the Shortcuts the start menu works but when I click on any of the resource links nothing happens. ?!?

 

Any ideas?

Gah, I hate stuff like this - just got it kinda-working on RM CC4. I had to

 

- copy all 8 (yes, 8. Can't bear to run a duplicate file finder on that tree) CDs to RMPublic\network apps\switched on ict\year

- create shortcuts which reference the UNC path (so "\\\RMPublicNetwork\Network Apps\Switched On ICT\Year\blah.exe")

- allow each executable (6 year groups + KS2 control pack + FS) in the file rules because the path rules didn't work (not with P:\ or UNC path - WHY RM, WHY?)

 

and still it won't open the pdfs from the silly interface. Ideas appreciated - it will save the pdfs, just not open them directly.

 

Don't get me started on how easy it would be do dump the lot on an intranet server and just dole it up from there - 2 mins work, max.

UNC Paths are not supported. Needs to be ran from a network drive. Why oh Why?!?!

 

On admin log in, map yourself a drive to the (assuming this is where you copied the cd files to) teacher share (Make sure its the same letter as the teachers use), open it up, find the flash file, create shortcut to desktop, rename.

Now copy the shortcut into the start menu directory or where ever you need it to be.

Should now pick it up as running from a network drive.

Just tested this, it works.
