Hi, got a relative who wants to get her other 1/2 a Leatherman for Xmas (she is leaning towards Leatherman, but could be swayed), preferably a "cool" looking one (I think she likes the black ones). I don't really know her other 1/2, so would like to spread the blame on any recommendation.

Anyone like to suggest which model they would like to get?

I've had a Leatherman since my army days and I still use it on an almost daily basis. Tough as old nails it is, and very handy to have in the house for random tasks. I had a couple of Gerber's before that, but the pliers blade always broke so I gave up on them.

There was a discovery channel programme about leatherman and the ceo uses a test jig to cut a nail with the leatherman and then it still cuts a piece if paper.

I have a super tool 2000.

I went through a phase of buying quite a few, from letherman's (skeletool, surge) gerber (suspension) and swiss (victorinox).

The gerber is nice because the pliers are sprung, but the only one i carry around with me at work is the skeletool, has everything i need and is really light.

The victorinox and surge felt too heavy to carry around unless they are clipped onto a belt.

I personally prefer the leatherman tools where the blades are on the outside of the handle (wave, charge, surge etc) as the blades can be used and put away with less faff and with practice one handed.

The way the super tool etc work is you need to open the tool part extract another tool to release the lock to then retract the open tool, after forgetting mine one weekend away and having to use an original PST I missed the ease of use of my Charge TTi

Thanks - something (for her) to consider.

I have to admit, if I leave home for work without my Leatherman (Blast), I feel like I've had a limb removed..heh. Not had to consult the (naff) IT toolkit since my missus bought that for me.

i feel a sudden need for a multitool thanks to this thread!

I already carry a slipjoint knife and i have one of my own forged bottle openers on the keyring so i'd be looking at pliers and screwdrivers as primary functions, tips on best model?
