New tablet recommendation

Hi there,

 

I want to get the missus a tablet for Christmas and don't really want to spend over the £200 mark so I'd like to seek the expert opinions of you guys and gals please!

 

Some of the things that could be important is being able to watch movies through the television and also buying/reading books.

 

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Nexus 7 is really good i've got one and love it.

If you're not willing to stretch the £200 budget (you'd have to stretch it quite far though!), then you are probably limited to an cheap Android option. Of the options though, I'd have to agree with above and go for a Nexus 7.

At that price for a good tablet you're probably looking at a nexus 7 or kindle fire HD

For under £200 the nexus7 is the only devce worth consideration IMO though I'm biased as I own one! If youre feeling slightly more flush/generous the ipad mini (£280) or Nexus 10 (£330) also look pretty good.

Depends on the TV, were you thinking via an hdmi or similar cable? Or to a DLNA enabled TV via wifi? Or to a box plugged into the tv via the network?

Via DLNA or HDMI I can do both.

If you don't mind wired (a cheap micro HDMI to HDMI lead is under a fiver) then, while not a popular choice, you can pick up a Playbook for a smidgen over £100 (16GB) or £130 (64GB). Solid build, plays video well and has built in eReader (though I'd suggest the £1 reader on AppWorld has better functionality). Not a lot of apps available and no way of adding storage capacity, though. However, if you are happy with what it does out of the box and the limited range of apps it's quite a nice tablet.

 

DLNA has been coming since launch, but don't hold your breath. Latest rumour is that when BB10 is launched it (and DLNA) will trickle down to older devices, but don't count on it.

If you want to hook it up to a tv via hdmi then the fire hd is your choice.

Nexus 7 or the Kindle Fire is £99 on amazon until monday

It can be rooted to run full on android so looks good for a £99 device...

Probably can't be beat for £99, if you're going to break them every year or 2 and buy a new one go for it, I want a nexus 7 with an sd slot for future expansion really.

If you're buying a Nexus 7 from Google, be aware that they use TNT's cheapest possible delivery service.

 

This means that you can't redirect the delivery, so if you specified your home address (which might be obligatory if your card is registered there), you either have to be at home all day (weekdays only, no saturday delivery) or collect from their depot. I collected, it cost an hour of my time and was a pain in the a$$.
