martynbez Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 hi all, i work for the 4th largest school in england (thats what i have been told). 2,359 kids, over 200 teaching staff. Network size of around 600+ pc, 12 servers, 40 plus printer and interactive whitebroad and projector in every classroom! theres only 2 of us (network manager has a very bad back and does all he can) so kept very busy! Got a massive project over the summer with some 200 dell's and network cabling being re-done in the ICT block!

martynbez Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 i some ways it does seem small somit along the lines of 9 kids to every 1 pc thats coming down to 4 to 1. why over do things if it works! we have full cisco network up to L3 switch's and school is 5 main buildings all fibre together with full cisco wireless network. i think we maybe the only school in the england to be running cluster servers!

East Midland based former Operations Consultant, Network Backup Administrator and Senior Unix Operator. Waiting on exam voucher to take MCDST 70/271 & 70/272. Cannot believe there are currently no sites to take an exam between Milton Keynes (Which at best has extremely limited seats as I understand they mainly book their own students) and Coventry. Is the East Midlands such a land of cousin marriages that we do not warrant such amenities? Should probably save my wingeing until at least my 2nd post.

Looks a great site and will hopefully be useful for me as, although I am not an "Educational Professional" I do have two interviews lined up this week in that area. Wish me luck all and if anyone has any hints or tips for surviving an interview at a school, please feel free to divulge them - I think I need all the help I can get to be honest Tim

James - didn't get the job I'm afraid Interview went great and they complemented me as being the strongest candidate in respect of the actual interview. However, as always, my lack of server experience let me down - ah well, will just keep plugging away.

I've been a Support Technician / Network Manager in a number of primary schools (typically 13-15 different schools, 16-19 sessions, over a repeating two week schedule) for about 8 years but I've just got a job as a full time Network Manager in a secondary school (to start in September) so I thought it might finally be time to actually register here I'll be having a good read around over the summer while I work my notice Thanks in advance of all the help I'm bound to get!

Gavinc Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 (edited) Been on here a couple of weeks so i better introduce myself because I will be here for the long Run! haha I'm Gavin 23yr Old Technician for Dingwall Academy in the north of Scotland (my old school) Former Technician with the Highland Council covering all Primary Schools/Libraries in the area and (Secondary when required) No formal qualifications as yet, so rely on experience to get me job's, currently studying for an HNC in Computer Networking, CCNA, MCP, MCDST so that should keep me busy!
