The Dir of IT had the guys from Smoothwall in today to have a chat and he seems to be quite keen. I'm after some feed back good and bad about the smoothwall product and other options. WE are about the same except for the pupils facebook and the like are banned during the daytime and prep time. After that and during the weekends it is mostly whatever they want to do, except for the usual "Black Sites"

Hi I would like to add to this that we have a VDI solution in our school. Running XenDesktop, XenServer, Equalogic SAN and 3 fully populated Dell chassis. Originally we were using Chip PC thin clients but these were changed to Wyse TC's as their performance was better. The Gold image is XP SP3 (1ghz CPU and RAM) with Office 2007 installed. All other applications use AppV to stream them (this works very well). We also use AppSense to control the virtual environment. There are normally 4/500 desktops in use at anyone time peaking to 700. There is also a CAG for external access. Andrew

Hmm I have tried that. When my test image is in private mode and I am logged in as me, an Administrator, the printer is there as well as network printers set up through Presentation server. As soon as I set the image to Standard Mode Cached on the server, and logged in as me then not only does the local printer disappear but also the "one note" printer, the networked printer are still there. We are using Chip PC Xtreme thin clients as well as Wyse C10LE devices. Not tested with the Wyse jobs yet. Thanks a lot.

Calling all Citrix fans We have a Xendesktop farm issuing desktops to the pupils in the school. We are now in the process of giving terminals to some of the offices and I have a problem. Some of the important people have local printers and they need to keep these with the terminals. This in itself is not a problem. BUT, the local printers are not being shown within the desktop session. I have done a considerable amount of testing with this and found that the printer is shown and is available to the user if I put the image used in private mode. If the image is in Cached mode on the server, then the printer is not shown or available to use within the session. The printers are USB and the thin client devices do show the printer plugged into the terminals. I have the approriate policies set in the presentation server to allow local printers and I am certain that there are no group policies involved. Drivers are all installed onto the golden image as well. Can anyone help?

Could this be a WINS issue?

WE've seperated the wireless network from the LAN, but only recently. The wireless is now controlled by a Cisco firewall which controls all access with username and password (AD). The only ports open to them are 80 and 443 and they HAVE to go through our web filter. THis is pretty strict, including no internet during prep, only email.

They have just released their "new" version that now runs a linux flavour. This also of-loads multimedia to the local device rather than on the virtual desktop. We seem to have got a good deal with Chip regarding their software. After seeing it work, Xcaliber really works well at what it does.

Yup can totally see that. We however are starting from scratch and the Chips are just the ticket for our boarding houses. An increase in the infrastructure of the network is long overdue as well.

We are about to do a proof of concept using Citrix Xendesktop and all that goes with it using Jack PC as the thin client.

There's no issue. We are thinking about installing it as a lot of teachers are asking for TV progs to be recorded, as well as our already large library od DVD's and AVI files.Was just after opinions, if it delivered what it says, if there was other software/services out there that did the same, value for money etc.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Most HP Procurve switches will as well. VLAN's are the way we go. With proper planning means you can let the new network be potentially invisible to the rest of the network.
