lovelldr Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 It's a bloody nightmare here at the minute on the build up to summer holidays. The school is getting everyone down, the leadership is crap, and I'm just fed up with everything ... hence being sat down in the deputy's room reading through this site. Didn't realise there was a site like this. Glad I found it. Just looking forward to installing the new server and network equipment over the holidays and running the summer school ... if it actually gets set up in time for the holidays. Only 2 and a half weeks to go!!!
SteveB_NI Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 Still busy here but school ends on Friday for 2 months so it's all good! Over the past 2 weeks I've been trialling 1 laptop trolley in preparation for two to go into service in September. Busy busy! Essential that I learnt what was required though for me to do over the summer to ensure they work better. My list of work to do this summer is ever increasing - plus with me saving my holidays from half terms, xmas and easter, I have my full holiday allowance available to me this summer. I reckon I'll take 3 weeks minimum, with every Monday off in August too. Some sixth years brought me nice pressies today too as it was their leaving assembly It's hard to believe it's only been a school year since I started here but today just helped make it all worthwhile - so nice to be appreciated!
sidewinder Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 So far my list for the summer is: Totally empty the server room, move racks and put it all back tidily for the first time in 3 years Finish setting up a new server Go round every laptop in the school to change some wireless settings due to the server change Blitz the ISA server and start again from scratch, hoping to get it working properly Recable some points that are just simply...crap Change a few more server roles so that the oldest one is retired Thats just so far We also have an huge new block opening, so assuming its on schedule we need to get in there and set up various switches, computers and whiteboards. Also have another new IT suite being installed Plus Ive still got 2 weeks holiday to take out of the 6 I love the holidays though, so chilled out and you can get on with some REAL work rather than dealing with pointless problems all day and just patching things up
timbo343 Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 Its kinda quite where i am at the mo, just buying equipment at the mo and making sure that everything is ready for summer... My list of things to do tho... 1, New Email Server to configure with exchange 2007 and move all mailboxes.... nightmare 2, Update ALL computers in the school about 15 images to re-do 3, Roll out 100 new desktop machines and move 2 rooms worth to another location. 4, Cable 5 rooms due to room re-furbs 5, Change/move rolls on servers as we have too many servers 6, Create all new kids logons.... nightmare 7, Router and firewall upgrade 8, Relocate the sims server and put in a gig network card 9, The usual... tidy up server room and office. 10, another school is buying 20 of our old machines, make sure all PAT lables are recorded and taken off machines. 11, Setup inhoused VLE.
webman Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 Me & bossman don't have that much to do this summer but it includes: Install RM CC3 SR6 x2 Re-structuring software package allocations to machines, streamlining shortcut menus etc Rebuild all workstations (and backing up half a dozen outlook user profiles.. stupid outlook) Upgrade memory and harddrives in 60 machines Document and diagram the network - switches, ports, rooms etc in the IT wiki Create howtos and flash video tutorials to build up the user wiki Implement new helpdesk Install a new IT suite (5th) of 30 machines Coordinate about 12 Promethean IWB installs Continual testing of Moodle/Eduspaces and Zimbra Probably something else I've forgot... probably something to do with SIMS... :? Lol, looking forward to October when we have to move the servers 8O
Sylv3r Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 I will be looking to do the following: > Take possesion of the new sixth form centre, training centre and new Reception block inc helping snag the areas etc > Unbox and Install 230 new Curiculum Workstations < Using Windows Vista if I feel adventurous > Unbox and install 20 new Admin Workstations > Rebuild all existing 360 workstations > 4 New Servers to be installed > Creation of VLAN's across the network > Installation of an additional 7 x 48 port switches > Instllation of 18 Promeathean IWB's > Overseeing the remaining installations of a projector and PC in all classrooms (20ish to go) > New admin server to be installed > Various SIMS.net updates > Upgrading to Microsoft Office 2007 across the site > Upgrade of 20 - 30 workstations > Installation of 6 plasma screens across the school > Move to a new office within the new Sixth Form block > Ensure the new electronic registration system is up and running for September > Installation of 10 extra Wireless Access Points Probably more, but i've no idea how I am going to get all of the above done never mind any additional jobs. Looks like i'll be in the full 6 weeks with my Techician in for 2 of them.
sidewinder Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 2, Update ALL computers in the school about 15 images to re-do Ugh...forgot about imaging...should probably add that to my list Although to be honest, since we tightened security and stopped kids being able to install or even run anything, the major suites need to be imaged a lot less often. Only real reason to is if there is a load of new versions of apps
dave.81 Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 We break up next Friday 6th, oh the joys of working in an independant school. Although this year i am no employed through the holiday which is a bit *$^& although will manage 2 weeks off. This summer i will mostly be... Upgrading RAM/HDD and setting up Raid on 2 of our servers, complete reinstalls coming for both them DC/SDC Upacking and setting up 20 new pc's for main IT Suite, well if Bursar doesn't change his mind again Moving old 20 around the college to replace old crap Use old crap to upgrade a few to make useable again Look into RIS and maybe setup - then image all pc's in college If not re-install 90% of machines with latest software etc Investigate Green energy Empty Office while they rip a wall/window out for 3 weeks, my poor servers Install split Air-con unit at last Erm i'm sure there is more but i cant remember it's too early.
