What distro do you use and why?

I started off using Mandrake because the hardware detection suited my needs, moved onto Slackware for a while and still like it but now I stick to Debian for servers (longer lifecycle) and Ubuntu for the laptop.

Im looking at the possibility of dual booting my mac between OSX and gentoo, need to do some reasearch into if its possible (im sure Geoff will tell me it is, being the uber gentoo guy here ) but for now, its just OSX Tiger.

Good plan, I replaced my home machine long time ago, this summer I replaced my work desktop with SuSE10, never looked back - If I need windows for something I'm only an 'rdp:/' away - but mostly I don't need to, there are enough decent linux apps.

 

I use k3b for burning and dd if I just want to image something.

Well, I've been running Gentoo on my P3 dually for around 3 years (without a reinstall!). Considering ditching Gentoo for Ubuntu but I've decided to wait until Xubuntu to go stable and release ISOs. Given the age of my hardware, I can't run heavyweight desktops like Gnome and KDE without significant performance penalties. XFCE suits me fine anyway (I have to confess I did replace the rather lame file manager with ROX Filer though).

 

What do people here use to burn DVD's

 

K3B here too. I use it for iso's too. I'm lazy.

DVDShrink does actually work under Wine (Ubuntu specifc install instructions here). However if you want a workalike I'd suggest DVD2ISO. Its a perl script so no fancy interface, but it does do exactly what it claims.

lol my browser has this tendancy to keep wondering to the apple site on the software and developers sections and flash backs of expose with the ripples and the Function keys to make the windows move around and just little things like that lol.

 

If I have to wait much longer, I think I will get this :

(Staying ON topic): I'm still enjoying Ubuntu a lot, and want to also use Fedora so that I can learn some RedHat network management skills...I'm also waiting for the next release of Ubuntu which looks like it will house a lot of new features.

 

Still haven't had time to look at little Linux projects on the school network- started my HND, attending a 2003 server course soon...still married...still a dad...still training my technician and taking flak from staff...

First distro I used was SuSE - and loved it - still do, its come a long way since i first started using it (v6 IIRC) - especially in the 8 & 9 vers where YaST was graphical from teh word go!

 

installs a dream, never had a failed install with it

 

Now RH -- tried it - couldn't get X system running on any PC and promptly gave up

 

Stuck with SuSE ever since - now moving to replace as many servers at my school as i can - starting with the proxy & intranet servers

 

my personal website (http://amethyst.homelinux.net) has a great uptime of about 315 days and climbing - got apache2, php, mysql and ftp enabled with about a dozen users on it
