I am looking at Emerge for our PE Dept. I like the product but just wondered what people have found to be the best device to run Emerge on? We cant afford IPADs for all PE staff so something cheaper with android looks the way to go.

 

Any recommendations from those using Emerge?

We use Emerge with our PE department on iPOD touches. Soem of our Leadership team use emerge on their iPAD's - both work well.

Think about what else the devices could be used for by the department: buying them (any device) JUST for this purpose is a huge investment!

Whatever you use, pick something that fits onto a jogger-armband type thing and can be tied into a pedometer.

Both I would say.

 

We trialled it with Iphones, Ipads, Motoroala Xooms and the HTC Desire S last year for 6 months.

 

The apple devices came out clear winners by all staff.

 

I've used it myself on an android and the experience was very poor (crashing often, slower, poor update experiences, connection problems, problems setting up the proxy).

 

We have gone apple 100% now in our school now and its working well.

I prefer the iDevices too. Android though is nice generally, but haven't used the app much and it seemed a bit crashy as mentioned.

iPod Touch is a good way to go, if you can pick up a few low spec models relatively cheaply.

The benefit of an iPad, is the use of screen space / layout is much more user friendly. It's equivalent to having two TFTs on your desktop. The list of classes is on one side, and the register on the other for example.

Test Android out and see how you fair. A quality Android tablet will be usable for many things, but may set you back a fair few quid anyway.

You should be able to download the apps and connect to the demonstration server, or they'll set you up with a demo linked to your school data if you're really serious.

I've found that though my Transformer Prime is nice, some apps aren't built for it. This is the problem with Android.

A good camera is useful on whatever as Emerge now lets you record video and photo for use when adding behaviour / achievements. )

No, but we did on the Motola xoom which I guess is a similar experience.

 

It was awful. I can only say get iPads for Emerge and you won't be dissapointed

We have been using a mixture of iPod touches, iPads and the odd Android device for the last six months. Other than the fiddly set up, we have had no issues with any devices,

but the staff who have used them seem to prefer the iPod touches. We use emerge for duty staff, PE and Drama staff who are constantly on the move, so we need something

comparatively small.
