Old Copper Piping

I am getting a complete new Central Heating System installed. The old Copper Pipes are getting ripped out and someone said I could get some cash for them. Anyone know if this is true. Also have the old Indirect hot water cylinder.

Are they worth hanging onto and taking to a Scrap Merchant?

 

I guess old radiators arent worth anything?

Metal seems to be worth money these days so yes I think you will get something for all of it.

 

Try looking for metal recycling sites in your area...try looking here British Metals Recycling Association (BMRA) - find your nearest scrapyard, scrap merchant or scrap metal dealer

And as such it may be part of their factored "quote" , but unless that's on their quote it's yours to get the value from.

No he is leaving everything for me as that is what we agreed.

 

Not sure how much a house worth of copper will weigh but hopefully I should get a few quid?

Find out if they are steel/cast or copper first. Then take them allong. If they are ferous you won't get anythign significant but it's the easiest place to get shot.

 

If the water tank is pre-insulated on the outside then they may not bother to weigh it and just use a guide price.

 

 

If there is more than one Scrap merchant in the vacinity then it may be worth getting a price off both. Depends on how much fuel you burn runnign arround.

I got about £95 from my old copper tank alone. Bloke who stopped the leak tried to take away, very kind of him. Wasnt part of the deal, unless he was paying me.

 

If you're going down the scrappy, always worth taking the rads down too.

the scrappys around here pay approx £900-£1100/tonne for copper and about £50-70 a tonne for scrap steel/iron, but for radiators they will often give more than the weight in steel indicates as they often have brass fittings which are worth more.

I recently had all new central heating.

 

To get the best price, separate the copper from the brass as the brass is more valuable. Remove the lagging from the tank just leaving bare copper.

 

It's worth phoning around as scrap prices vary from place to place, but i got £175 for my tank, brass connectors and copper micro bore piping.

 

The best prices are usually just the non ferous metals places so they won't take your rads. Steel is only about £200 a ton.

So piping is worth considerably more

Actually you'd be surprised - radiators are pretty hefty taken in with all the pipe work and cylinder you'll be in for a few quid - especially if you have some of the really old big rads.

Those types you will get more at a reclamation place.

They look like normal radiators to me. Some doubles and a couple of singles.

Still they will be worth a few quid although if they are in good nick get them on ebay, the retail price for rads is unbelievably ridiculous! People always needs rads either for replacements or to add extras.

Definitely take it to the scrappies - we did exactly the same and got £130 back for some piping and fittings (the rads were new so we just did the pipework, not the whole lot and we didn't have a boiler).

Always keep all my cable off-cuts and old cable rip-outs, had the scrap man round during the week for table frames and chair bases at work and he will give us a decent price for the scrap cabling, going to let me know what it will be when he comes for the next stack of old tables.
