Like the sound of the auto sort of personal and automated messages, nothing new tech wise but a neat idea if it works. What does seem odd is the rebranding, whatever you think of the platform Hotmail is known worldwide whereas as it stands we could now end up with a conversation that could go something like... "OK you're on Outlook, but hold on what you want is your Outlook Live account (Live@Edu) which isn't the same as Outlook on Office 365 which we haven't been upgraded to yet... also all these are different to the program called Outlook which is on your desktop" Might end up being one of those branding choices that gets reversed in 6 months time when all the users are still calling it Outlook and getting utterly confused as to where their Hotmail account has gone.
Michael Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 As far as I'm aware, Microsoft are still keeping @hotmail and @live domains, but optionally you can create an alias and have @Outlook too. Apparently the new interface is a modern looking Outlook with Metro thrown into the mix. The Outlook interface remains unchanged (from what I've seen) and it works well. Microsoft are certainly making positive steps when it comes to e-mail.

jamesfed Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Wonderful refresh of Hotmail in my POV - then again I'm one of those who will be queuing up (if that turns out to be the right term or not I don't know!) outside John Lewis/whoever for a Microsoft Surface on launch day! Jumped on a full name email address alias as well, won’t be changing permanently from my Hotmail address though anytime soon (not just because of the issues with Windows Phones).

Don't think I have had any spam make it to my hotmail inbox in quite some time (although Junk fills up nicely!). With the changes from Windows Live to Microsoft accounts the rebranding makes sense so yes they did have to rebrand but maybe not for the reasons you suggest.

No self respecting geek would have recommended hotmail to their friends or family, it was a featureless webmail throwback from the 1990's. At least the Outlook rebrand has some features that will put them in the same league as their rivals.

Many of the features in Outlook.com have just come over from the last major upgrade (Sweep/built in IM/ect) - outlook.com is little more than a reskin and a relaunch.........

If they just introduced aliases and the other stuff mentioned in TFA i've not missed much. Hotmail had a seriously bad reputation for spam, the accounts that I use in school (usually logging into kids accounts) seem to be littered with rubbish. Many of the features in Outlook.com have just come over from the last major upgrade (Sweep/built in IM/ect) - outlook.com is little more than a reskin and a relaunch......... i must have fallen for the marketing drive when they said they "built a brand new service from the round up"

Lets remember what junk kids sign up for - I would like to bet half of that 'spam' is stuff they have only brought on themselves. It is pure marketing drive, only the stupid tech blogs (oh and the BBC) out there are falling for it. All the same the Metro UI is new and the long term changes around having a Microsoft account and not a Windows Live account are new.
