You know the 'Think 21 policy'?

The one we have here in the UK that makes bar staff check the age of anyone they think is under the age of 21 before serving them alcohol? Well, here is one we saw in a bar in San Diego last week:

 

 

And I got carded. I'm 42 now and very chuffed

Sorry stupid brit here that has never been abroad, but what is carded? Is that like in bars where they give you a wrist band you flash at them to show they have checked you out?

No it means when you are asked for ID to prove your age, i.e an id card.

even though im under 30. that doesnt sound a bad thing. far too many pubs here are filled with idiots. when i used to manage a place it was a one strike rule. and i knew who to watch. although saying that it doesnt mean that if someone is over 30 they are not an idiot, we had plenty of them too!

Locally we have a under 25 policy for being ID'd in the pubs, clubs and off licenses. However the policy does sometimes puzzle me when I'm being served by an 18 year old.

I don't think it's a bad idea to put a blanket 'We card anyone under 35' as this is bascially an excuse to card everyone and the chances of catching underage drinkers increases. I've been in a lot of pubs before the 'Think 21' initiative where barstaff would card a bunch of lads and they'd get lairy about it - this way the barstaff have their backs covered. That being said, I haven't been ID-ed since I was 20 I am a little sad about that as obviously they think I'm an old fart so they don't need to bother. Edited July 2, 2012 by AMLinington

I haven't ever been carded. I started going grey at age 21

I think I've only ever been carded once since hitting 18.. never been asked since. I always carry my ID with me just in case, but I swear there's a thick layer of dust building in that wallet slot now.

 

I did get asked to show I was young enough to get teen/student prices though on cinema tickets once or twice..

I do get asked for ID now and again, probably once a month. Always a feeling of satisfaction when the barman/till assistant is surprised that I'm 28

TBH the requirements annoy me. driving licence/passport are all well and good... If you have them.

 

I don't drive and have no passport. And there's no chance I'm taking my birth certificate.

 

If the government want to do this sort of thing, they should provide ID to everyone. WITHOUT charge.

as stated earlier in the thread I find it amusing that a bar will have 18 year old deciding who look over 21 and who doesn't. I once got turned away from the The Cross in London because in the words of the door staff "The old bloke with the beard wouldn't like it in here anyway....."

I once had a stand up arguement with a checkout lady - I was buying a bottle of whiskey for a friends birthday. I had my girlfriend with me at the time, She said to me "Does she have ID?" I was like er no, im buying it. She said "She needs ID because you could be buying it for her" I said but its me thats buying it, Do I look over 25? but she wouldnt have it! I agree - I LOVE the idea of a national Identity card scheme, I'm less keen on the paying for it - I thought we already paid for it in our excessive tax and NI payments!

 

That being said, I also love the idea of Microchipping everyone at birth... lol

I agree...there should be another option of ID

But if I didnt drive I'd probably just relent and get a provisional licence purely for ID, it's just too much hassle not having any, for me anyway
