The Nexus 10 sounds good (assuming the rumours are true).

 

Google and Samsung will announce a new 10-inch tablet codenamed "Manta" at its October 29th event, according to The Next Web. If the sites unnamed sources are to be believed the Manta will feature a 10-inch 2560x1600 display with an iPad-beating pixel density of around 300ppi. The tablet, which if real will likely be released as the Nexus 10, will reportedly be sold alongside the existing Asus Nexus 7 and new LG Nexus 4 as part of a multi-manufacturer Nexus program. There aren't any further details on the purported Nexus 10; processor and pricing will be key to the tablet's success.

 

At the same event, Google will announce a slight refresh to its Nexus 7 line, bringing HSPA+ 3G connectivity to the tablet for the first time, as well as the now-confirmed internal storage bump. The Next Web also reports that both the Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 will launch with an updated OS, Android 4.2. It named "content in the center" (a new Play Store Widget), "Tablet Sharing" (multiple user accounts on one device), and horizontal and vertical panoramic photo capture as headline features for the new OS. It's not clear if Google will release 4.2 under a new codename or if it will still be named Jelly Bean. Although, as with any rumor, these details should be taken with a pinch of salt, The Next Web seems pretty certain that its sources are accurate. (Source)

This is a significant development for schools.

It is, but only if they buy Nexus tablets. Schools that have already purchased Android tablets from other manufacturers will probably never be able to upgrade to Android 4.2 (at least officially).

Luckily it is open source. An official update may not be possible as you point out, but there will be updates.

Good to see they've finally sorted out the screen rotation on the home screen in the latest version. It's a minor thing but it was really frustrating when your were browsing the web or watching a video in landscape mode and had to physically spin the device back round every time you hit the home button!

 

I really hope they they implement multipe user accounts/logons in the next update. It's something that's been noticeably lacking in android/IOS tablets.

I'm very tempted by the Nexus 4. The only thing that's putting me off slightly is the fact that you can't change the battery.

 

Don't know why, at the moment I still have my Nexus One and I've never changed the battery in that yet. Storage doesn't worry me, again the Nexus One is still in it's original state/ROM and the storage bugs me on that, but don't really see me using 16GB (probably wouldn't even use the 8GB but for £40 might as well go top end again).

Google’s Nexus 7 tablet is on fire — literally

Apparently one Chinese customer bought a new Nexus 7 only to later be disturbed by the site of it randomly catching on fire. It appears to have been caused by spontaneous combustion of the battery. According to the user, the fire was so bad that the black smoke emitting from the tablet began to consume the entire room. (Source)
