Nexus 7 suffering from screen separation in some cases, untightened screws may be to blame « The Verge

 

We liked the Nexus 7 quite a bit when we took a look at it last month, but some units appear to be suffering from a problem: namely, the screen is popping up from the housing. Users at the xda-developers forums have noticed the issue, and we discovered it on one of our Nexus 7 units as well. The problem seems to first manifest with the screen creaking noticeably whenever any pressure is applied, but over time the edge can begin to visibly jut up from the plastic bezel itself.

It was OK to begin with but mine now seems to be suffering from the problem the one above has with the screen popping up slightly on the longer left-hand side as it's held in portrait mode. It's not quite as bad as the image shown but there's definitely a noticeable creak on occasion when pressing around the problem area. It seems to seat back down if you press firmly down on it and run your finger along the edge but it's popped up again since doing that so it's not looking like a permanent fix. I'm not quite sure if it's bad enough to warrant returning the device but I'll see if it gets any worse over the next week or so.

 

Is anyone else having the same issue with their Nexus7?

I ordered my N7 from the Play Store on the same day as you did (28th) and everything seems to be fine with mine hardware-wise.

I've phoned Google Play and logged an RMA call for the screen seperation issue on my Nexus7. Most of the posts on the web suggest that Google will allow you to keep the existing device until they send out a replacement by courier which you can swap over so it shouldn't leave me without my tablet for any length of time thankfully!

 

Sounds like it was just bad luck on my part :(

At least you went for the smaller version as its not sold out yet so hopefully it wont be too long.

AnandTech have posted their review of the Nexus 7. Very thorough (as always) and well worth a read.

 

 

It's a bit disappointing to see just how slow the NAND is in tablets and smartphones generally. I have also noticed my Nexus 7 slowing down when there are a lot of things happening in the background.

Sequential read/write speed isn't bad, but it's the random write speed that's really a problem. We're talking about write speeds of a couple hundred KB/s. Remember what I said earlier about how multitasking can take an otherwise sequential IO stream and make it look fairly random? I suspect the low random write performance is one reason we're seeing significant slowdowns with background IO. Not all NAND controllers do well with concurrent reads and writes, which could be another contributing factor to poor performance.

 

Note that for light usage this isn't a problem. Similar to the first generation of affordable MLC SSDs for PCs, as long as you're doing a lot of reading you'll be ok. It's really for the heavier usage models that this is a problem. On a tablet however, simple background installation or downloading of files counts as heavy these days.

 

The real solution to this problem is to integrate better NAND flash controllers on-board, or even onto the SoC itself. Tablet makers are still mostly focused on cost cutting, but eventually we'll see real SSDs with good controllers in these things. Windows 8 tablets, at least the high end ones due out later this year will be among the first to incorporate real SSDs. (Source)

After two and a half weeks my 16GB Nexus 7 died!! Boiught it from Currys online but they had no more stock so got a full refund. Tesco Online have them in stock so managed to get another one. Hope this one lasts me longer than the first one did.

Is anyone else having trouble with the "free £15 on google play" offer? It says I must activate google wallet on my nexus 7 but won't let me download the app from the market, saying my device is incompatible in this country!

I don't think I had to do anything with Google Wallet. I just signed in to my Google account when I first set up the thing and now when I go to buy something from the Play store, there is an option to pay with "Google Play balance" which had the £15 in it.

As mentioned above, you don't need to download an app to get the £15 credit. All you need to do is sign in to your Google account when setting up your Nexus 7 for the first time.

 

Upon configuring your WiFi connection (it should be noted that if you don’t have WiFi available, you can’t even get past the setup wizard!) you are prompted for your Google account in the usual way and after a few short steps you are ready to go. If this is your first Nexus 7 tablet (and you are the first owner of the tablet) you will receive your £15 / $25 free Play Store credit at the end of the setup wizard. This credit can be spent on anything in the Play Store (except hardware) and appears as an additional payment method when completing a transaction. Note that purchases using the credit must be paid for in full using the credit. That means that when you have 19p left, you can't spend that on a game by topping up the remaining cost using another payment method. (Source)

I suspect that it's the "if this is your first nexus 7" bit I'm falling foul of. Ah well.

If you don't mind doing a factory reset, you could give the following a try in order to get the £15 credit...

 

The way I got it to work was to delete the debit card I had attached to the account FIRST. Then I did a factory reset, then I added my debit card back to the account. (Source)
