According to iSuppli, the 16GB Nexus 7 costs $166.75 (£129.21 inc. VAT) to produce, so Google are making a fairly decent profit on each tablet sold.

 

The entry-level 8-Gigabyte (GByte) version of Google’s new Nexus 7 media tablet carries a bill of materials (BOM) of $151.75, according to preliminary findings from the IHS iSuppli Teardown Analysis Service. When manufacturing expenses are added, the cost increases to $159.25. The high-end model with 16GBytes of NAND flash memory has a $159.25 BOM, for a total cost of $166.75.

Seeing this makes me super happy as I have just ordered the microUSB to pen drive adapter cable for this very reason :D

I'd bet with Apples buying power the ipad isn't far off that in terms of cost to produce.

Bare in mind that doesn't take in to account the cost of R&D, marketing, shipping, packaging, distributors cut etc.

 

They're probably not making much now but will be hoping for a sales boom at this price which will drive their costs down and their profits up over the coming months.

 

Even my missus has pre-ordered one from eBuyer!

EBuyer would be good but their delivery sucks up here and it looks like neither Scan or Overclockers have it.

Not really, you can change the brightness and colour of the background. I use sepia during the day to remove the glare and at night white text of black which is much easier on the eyes. Remember with a tablet you can read after the sun goes down without a torch unlike un-illuminated e-ink (I know you can get clip on lights etc for a Kindle) I was reading books on my S2 this way via Kindle app and Aldiko which is also a wonderful app.

 

I got the wife a Kobo touch and whilst the e-ink screen is a joy to read from as nice as paper in fact you do suffer from no light source so a tablet/phone is preferably if you're doing something like camping....

Hmmm keep getting tempted with the 16GB one now with £10 off at HMV is only £20 dearer than the 8GB from Google play once you add the shipping.

I would say the opposite, what you need when camping is long battery life (unless you're cheating with an EHU:p) and if we ever get decent weather the ability to read it in sunlight. You can get clip on lights for ebook readers which solves the light problem.

Well I'll give you my honest review of exactly this in a few weeks - me and the missus are going camping, me with my Kindle, her with her Nexus - we'll see who's still reading after 3 days ;)

Google have just billed me for my Nexus7 so with any luck that means it's en route ! No update on the Google Play website as of yet though? Edited by flyinghaggis

As do I :( I'm tempted to just refuse delivery and get my money back (reason I ordered it from Google Play was I assumed they would be first to ship). Just checked my Google Wallet account and no update still.. (last one was on the 30th June, when I ordered it)

I've just had confirmation of dispatch through this afternoon (ordered it via Google play on the 28th of June) so hopefully you shouldn't have too much longer to wait.

My order is now going to have to wait...all the spare money is going to repairing the guttering on the house...and the removal of the old guttering as it seems to be asbestos :(

 

On the bright side its my birthday in September so i might get one with my birthday money...if I get any and the freezer will last until after christmas

Found out yesterday that an admin error means I'll be getting a couple hundred quid in unpaid annual leave next month - it was meant to be! :D

Mine arrived today and the touchscreen didn't work :'( The support 'specialist' couldn't believe it! Just ask @Domino how epic the actual unboxing/support expeience actually was actually.

Mine arrived tonight and no technical issues with it so far thankfully! It's all working as expected.

 

It's the first android device I've owned so it's been a bit of a learning curve but in general I'm really impressed with it. The build quality/finish of the device is really good (not quite up there with the ipad but much better than similarly price tablets) and the screen is vibrant and crisp too. It's a steal for the money when you consider the price and the specs!

 

I cant quite decide on whether the 7" form factor is the way to go or a step backward? On the one hand it's widescreen form factor is great for watching movies, makes it narrow enough to fit in a jacket pocket (just!) and means you can confortably hold it with one hand which is something that could bever be said of the ipad. However, it does sometimes feel slightly too small/narrow when trying to view webpages (especially in portrait mode) and the on screen keyboard is too narrow to be able to type comfortably on in landscape mode (which is something I found to be quite effective on my ipad).

 

It's tricky for me to pass judgement on Android 4.0 Jelly Bean as I've never used Android before but it seems to be at least on a par with IOS in my opinion. The fact you can simply plug it into your computer to copy across files/etc and don't have to deal with the hell that is itunes is awesome! The interface is now a lot smoother than it used to be but there's still occasionally noticeable lag when loading/scrolling up and down webpages that simply doesn't happen with IOS. It's not really a problem as such but it's disappointing given all the headlines about 'project butter' that they haven't managed to banish the lag completely.

 

Overall all though it's an epic device (especially for the price) and I can't see anyone who buys it being disappointed :cool:
