Adding User Name To Print Jobs

Not sure if this is the right section, but here's what I'm looking for:

some means of adding the user name to the header (or footer) of every print job.

We're not after any sort of billing, etc. we just want a user name adding to the top of every page (NOT a separate banner page)

 

Anyone know of any software that will do this?

Theres an old topic regarding this. Basically theres a way of doing it with internet explorer but not with other programs. You will have to use some kind print management software to do it. The best I can think of is using something like pykota and tea4cups which will allow you to run pre and post hooks on the print jobs.

For office documents, you could always edit the default template to put the username in.

I knew of the internet explorer and office document methods, but there are other apps that need to print, hence why I was asking if anyone knew of any software.

just checked them out, but they rely on Linux, but my print server is windows 2003.

Any Windows software that can do this?

Not free. You are going to have to fork out for something like PaperCut or Print Manager.

Note that Print Manager doesn't provide that functionality as far as I can see.

I have suggested it to them as a feature to add - they were calling around their customers as they are working on a new release, so wanted to see which things needed improving/adding. Hopefully they will.

there is a way in 2003 where you can get it to print out the username of the user that sent the document, it wont appear as a header of footer but it will print out an extra page informing you who sent the job.

Yeah I know, that's the banner page, but I don't want to go wasting a page for each print job - i just want user name on each page.

Having looked at the website Papercut doesn't offer the functionality to do this either

Papercut does offer that functionality - we use it here. Apparently Impero also offers it.

Thanks for you reply but Papercut is a print management software. I was seeking an answer for how it was done for IE without the need for PMS, within the quoted text above.

You can add usernames to IE printing quite easily using a registry key to edit the page footer. Just add %username% to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\PageSetup\footer.

Thank you for your input, I've taken out &u&b&d and replaced it with %username% within HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\PageSetup\footer

 

Is this correct? As only '%username%' prints out as %username%.

Doh I managed it before I had papercut doing it. I guess the syntax is slightly different than I remember. Try opening your IE and going to print > page setup. Change one of the items to custom then %username%. Try printing, then if that works you can copy the reg key from your computer with the correct syntax.
