I've got a text this morning to tell me there is swgfl issue with access to google services... I don't have it here, thank god...
-
I ran into this problem. The boot device must contain files like bootmgr.efi and the efi folder that you will see are on the Windows DVD. I noticed some of Microsoft's tools do not add these to boot media correctly but you can simply copy them from the DVD and it should work ok.

Windows deployment services with USB Hub, USB key with capture or discover boot image for Windows deployment services, USB Ethernet. Also USB keyboard and mouse since WinPE doesn't support the touchscreen. Works quite well, about 30-40 mins per tablet since they arn't the fastest in the world.

You should be able to make your own with a pair of scissors, firstly cut off the connectors you don't need then near the exposed end you score around the cable to weaken the plastic and then pull the plastic insulation from the cables (hopefully without the wire). It takes a little practice but no special tools required other than a reasonable amount of patience.

ICT Systems Manager - Poole - £25,727 - £28,127 pro rata
BHMS replied to BHMS's topic in Educational IT Jobs
It's the Network Manager equivalent but without line management resonsibility which reduces it by 2-3k from the full blown network manager you would get a secondary. -
Details here Term time + training days only, the pro rata works out approximately 85% of the listed salary. A great job. I'm sure I will miss it when I'm working in my new role. PM if you have any questions.

There is a group policy setting: Admin Templates > Windows Components > File Explorer (Windows Explorer in Win 7 I think) > No Entire Network in Network Locations Enable that one.

Control Panel > Region (this might be named slightly differently in Win7) > Administrative Tab Copy Settings, Tick Welcome Screen This should set the correct input language for login. -
Adding User Name To Print Jobs
BHMS replied to Richie1972's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Doh I managed it before I had papercut doing it. I guess the syntax is slightly different than I remember. Try opening your IE and going to print > page setup. Change one of the items to custom then %username%. Try printing, then if that works you can copy the reg key from your computer with the correct syntax. -
Adding User Name To Print Jobs
BHMS replied to Richie1972's topic in Network and Classroom Management
You can add usernames to IE printing quite easily using a registry key to edit the page footer. Just add %username% to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\PageSetup\footer. -
Defrag to move the unmovable? Best scheduled app?
BHMS replied to dany2010's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
The unmovable files include the pagefile and the hibernation file. Disabling both of these will allow you to shrink it further. Just re-enable them after. -
My papercut 11.8 doesn't inspect the drivers. I turn watermarking on and the printer either starts churning out error pages or it works, depending on the driver.

RM were 3 months late sending a modem and router for our new DSL connection with the SWGFL. I had to chase them up by e-mail twice. On the plus side I'm happy it's now installed. A good service when it finally arrived.

Try the Broadcom 5.93.97.83 wifi driver. The others I tried had quite a few issues, e.g. looking connected but actually not, including the newer ones.

HyperV 2012 - Import vhdx without XML
BHMS replied to garethEds's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
Ahh I didn't know you could partition it with MBR still. The MS book seems to miss that out. The main advantage of the new format is making it bigger than 2TB though. MS aimed it at large databases. -
HyperV 2012 - Import vhdx without XML
BHMS replied to garethEds's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
Nope. Straight out of the MCSA 2012 upgrade book I'm preparing for. Totally unsupported as a boot volume, no matter what. -
HyperV 2012 - Import vhdx without XML
BHMS replied to garethEds's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
.vhdx isn't supported as a boot volume, only as a second drive. You need to use a plain .vhd. VHDX uses a GPT partition which isn't supported by the Hyper-V bios system. Really stupid MS release a new image format you can't boot from because they can't wait for a BIOS update. -
This error message can also be generated if Windows 8 cannot save to My Pictures\Camera Roll. I had it happen on my school network before I fixed the permissions issues.

Smartboard USB intermittent connection
BHMS replied to laserblazer's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
This is Windows installing the wrong driver. Find the device in device manager, it will be called Smart USB Cable or USB to serial convertor i think. Update the driver, browse, find the smart folder > drivers > x86 or x64 > you want the driver starting STIX/STIX64 Sometimes I also had to install the 10.8 SP1 patch and repeat the process to get this working. -
I buy V7 laptop bags these days for around £10 and I haven't any any quality issues. Personally I use 13" laptops but it's the same style just scaled down.
-
Personally I went with the W510 for children and W700 for staff in my school. The W700 has just been replaced by the almost identical P3. It has a slightly lower 1600x900 res screen and a stylus holder on the case but should also be a little bit cheaper. The price difference between the W700 and a laptop with similar build quality is small considering it is single piece aluminium. You will want to use the included cases with them I imagine? The keyboard is securely glued into it so you aren't really going to have a huge amount of choice about that. The on-screen keyboard however is quite good and 11.6" gives you a decent size to type on compared to a real keyboard. Imaging them is a real obstacle but it is possible.

UEFI does not support PXE. I used discover media with WDS to image. The several hurdles I ran into and overcome using this process are listed above.
-
I didn't test the sound on all 32 but the full volume Win 8 sounds from the fresh image were quite annoying. I had to turn them down.
-
Imaging 32 wasn't much of a problem after I spent a week getting the first one booting from USB key and captured. I could do 5 a day with just a single USB NIC. I've had to power off one every now and then as you say. Do you find the keyboard gives a lot of double typed characters? That is my major niggle. I barely use the touchpad. There is a driver update on the Acer website that is meant to improve some of the touchpad issues but I still don't think it is perfect yet.
