Guest kerrymoralee9280 Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 Heard a great story today involving an IT teacher and the HT at our school. The HT went round to the IT teachers house one weekend to help him prepare for an interview that was going to put our school on the map. All was going well until our 'know it all' HT had an idea. "I have some brilliant slides on the school network, I can access them through terminal services and they will help us a lot" the HT said. The IT teacher said "That's great apart from internet isn't hooked up yet so we can't log on" The HT replied with "Oh, it's fine, you don't need the internet. Just type the school web address in here and it'll load up" The IT teacher tried explaining for ten minutes that the internet was needed for this to work after finally giving in to the "know it all" HT and saying, you're right, try it. The HT then spent half an hour trying to get it to work before giving in saying "it isn't work for some reason". The IT teacher just rolled her eyes. Apparently she still doesn't know to this day why it wasn't working even though the IT teacher stressed and stressed that the internet was down.
alonebfg Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 been there seen it got the tshirt whith certain peice reliced most recintly took me 3 days to sort it out after i said to a teacher dont install it and they did it was a dht. I nearly cried. (software was primary network tool)
elsiegee40 Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 Sometimes I really worry... I've seen it all before at both my current school and the previous one. :?
GrumbleDook Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 Yes ... the internet was down the other day ... I remember it well ... the Americans turned it off so that they could clear out the pipes that run on the bed of the atlantic ocean. Apparently they have been getting clogged up with seaweed and that is why the internet runs slow during a full moon. And I hate to say it but it is not only the Year 7 students that fall for this.
witch Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 Or, the old chestnut we have all heard: "But it was working yesterday" when we know that whatever it was has never worked, could never work and certainly doesnt work!! Will they listen? NO!!!
Friez Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 We've been asked to take specific websites off the Internet before!
webman Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 We've been asked to take specific websites off the Internet before! For added enjoyment, this can be simulated by creating a DNS alias for the domain name pointing to a local Apache server with virtual hosts 8) Just create a basic page saying 'At the request of this website has been removed from the Internet'
apeo Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 @webman: funny there are a few ways to do something like this but i must admit it never occured to me to just resolve it to an internal webpage... its pretty simple too...
BKGarry Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 Here is two for you. an english that i recon is just the result of someone actually doing the Weird Science experiment with a barbie doll, "Here is your new wireless laptop [takes is home 15miles away]" "[comes back the next day] i logged onto the network at home last night but i lost all my documents i worked on for 3 hours" to which i really apply "you donut, wireless means not using wires on the site, i didn't install any VPN solution on your laptop" Another was a group of students about 2 1/2 years ago (1 year after i started) we had a powercut in the school. the students ask "is the computer network working" "it is a powercut", i reply "yes but the servers have big batteries dont they" "and i answer but how will you get on to them if there is no power for the computers" Considering i work in a grammar school, and this is the cream of the crop! Gaz
davyboi Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 i once got asked to contact google and tell them to remove some porn images from a google image search, i cant remember what word brought them up ill just give them a call now shall i?
BKGarry Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 Heads PA, "Well you can just tell microsoft to sort out their programing for thw outlook journal" Yes i know bill very well, in feact we are going for a drink this friday I still cant get the journal working properly!
elsiegee40 Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 We have web based email here. At the head's request, the teachers have had this as their home page for the last 18 months... I get told at least once a month "I can't get onto the internet" On further probing, it turns out that they are confused because their home page isn't google. They don't seem to understand that the email is just a website like everything else! Google is at the top of their Favorites.... *Sighs* Lin
Halfmad Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 Davyboi - I did that and they actually did do it, got an e-mail back from the google support team saying they were sorry that the safe search hadn't caught them and that they'd fixed the problem.
BKGarry Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 It's not their fault really, We have the best, a part time teacher that gets me to take her register in sims every leason she is cocering instead of team teaching, the exact quote is "I didn't have them convert my blackboard to a whiteboard when i was still here so i will not switch from using a pen to a computer unless the pen will kill me" She has been teaching at the school since the 60s and recently retired from full time teaching

Geoff Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 i will not switch from using a pen to a computer unless the pen will kill me Is it a wireless pen?
BKGarry Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 lol, she is a good teacher, i have only had to do 1 3 times since septemeber so not too bad
enjay Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 We have web based email here. At the head's request, the teachers have had this as their home page for the last 18 months... I get told at least once a month "I can't get onto the internet" On further probing, it turns out that they are confused because their home page isn't google. We have just set up an internal home page, with links to websites of interest, email, Google and various key folders in the shared areas. It's funny how many people click on the link to Google and then type in the address bar when they want an Internet site, as they need to "get the Internet first".

Or the old favourite: typing the address into the Google search box, and then clicking the link! Andy

Lol I notice some of our lot do the exact same thing Maybe they think the Internet is Google?
Guest kerrymoralee9280 Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 It's that sense of familiarity, like driving your whole life wearing your seat belt everytime then one day getting in the car and not putting your seat belt on. You can guarantee that something feels missing.
enjay Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 Maybe they think the Internet is Google? Google would love that, wouldn't they! The fact that "to google" is a verb is success enough for them, surely, without actually becoming synonymous with the Internet. I suppose, Hoover and Cashpoint (a trademark of Lloyds bank) managed it... I did have fun trying to explain to someone how it was possible to get some Internet pages but not others during a problem with our ISPs DNS pages. "But they'll all the Internet, so why can it only see some of them?" - I'm not quite sure what picture they have of the Internet, but there's clearly only one of it in the world, it would be Internets if it was on lots of servers, no? :-) I also completely failed once to explain to my then-girlfriend how a 5% drink followed by another 5% drink does not make 10% alcohol. That's another thread altogether though!

_Bat_ Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 I'm not quite sure what picture they have of the Internet, but there's clearly only one of it in the world, it would be Internets if it was on lots of servers, no? :-) They don't have a picture of the internet. Most people have absolutely no clue how it works. Most people do not realise that websites are hosted on a server somewhere in the world. It just "works"... the internet is just one of these things that "happens". When I was about the age of 12, I had long begun to question how webpages got to my computer, so I did a google search and found a lot of useful information on the internet. I found it complicated at the time, but I was fascinated and kept going back to research more. Oh and I'd never dream of trying to explain how DNS works to a non technical person. Webservers, yes, but not DNS.
