[sims] SIMS LANID - Is it required and how do I know?!

Hello,

 

We currently have a LANID Environment Variable on each workstation where SIMS.net client is installed. However, I have heard rumours about it not being needed anymore. Please can you tell me if this is true and how I can check to make sure that it is no longer required before I stop assigning it.

Blimey - theres a blast from the past! Yes, you are right - the LANID is from the good old DOS days, and as far as I know is now retired. @vikpaw or @PhilNeal can you confirm?

Was from the old days of SIMS Launcher and beyond - so if you're using some antiqated modules for whatever reason, then you might need it, but you can be pretty sure no-one apart from maybe 1/2 people in admin will even remember launcher.

 

Six years ago, we had 2 machines with it, mine and bursar, as there was some old reports module in there, and old personnel but that was it.

but some times still needed for schools who archived data when moving into sims .net and sql. I had to set up a secondary school last month as a pupil who left in 1995 had applied for a job and the employer wanted some details from the school.

Problem was that the dates fell between our unitary split and it is quicker to do it via launcher than to request the data from the LA.

Because doing so would have meant having ancient data in a new system... They didn't want that.

Exam results, exams taken and dates that confirmed dates that the person was at the school. This was for a person who had left school in 1995!!!!

 

Personally I didn't really understand the need for this unless they were applying for a very secure role

To be fair this is a pretty standard request by many employers. We have data going back to 1990 in our system but only really on-roll and basic name info. If they want exam results from that far back

we may have them in paper records, but we just refer them to the exam board web sites. Most employers or colleges these days will want to see the original certificates, and if they can't provide them

they have no option but to contact the exam boards.

Just looking at AQA website and they charge to inform people of historical exams results and if you're having to go back into a DOS system, surely this is going a bit far. Do employers actually accept this or do they need the cerficates? Bit weird it costs as don't the local newspaper normally post exams results??

I don't charge because its worst case a trip to the exams store and look up the records in a filing cabinet. I am finding (I am the Exams Officer here) that more and more employers (especially public sector) require exam board paper work and will not take the schools word for it. Its one reason why I go on and on to our older pupils about the need to look after their certificates, as dealing with the boards has become an expensive business. If you did GCSE's with all three boards (entirely possible in many schools) thats three seperate requests and its going to cost you over £100 and take quite a while.

yeah but the local papers normally get the results from the LA's or from the schools direct

We don't issue the results of indivdual students to the local press, only the aggregated figures.
