Got my new server...

Sooo - got my new server. Yay!!

I will hug him and pet him and squeeze him and call him....Jupiter

I have kept my old server which is too difficult to rename so it is still 'server'. I will tell them that it is the name of a very small and obscure moon of Jupiter.

 

(a teacher noticed the new one appearing on her screen and said...."What's that Juniper thing then?" *sigh*)

 

Had to switch him off over the half term due to electrical work so I will be in at 7.30am on Monday (as always) to switch him on again. Hopefully all will be well.

Just wanted to share - apart from mrwITch, no one here would understand why I would be so excited about such a thing...philistines!!

Not very exciting to those of you who work in big schools with fancy servers, but for this small junior school, it is pretty good. And as I have kept my old server in the system I am on my way to the 12 servers and 6 or 7 virtual servers that I would like - empire building or what!!!

Nice With the new xeons out the older ones are nicely priced - got dual 5620's in both our new servers Booting VM's is *rapid*

Sounds lovely! Mine's an HP 350 g6, new last year. I was slightly perturbed the first time it started, it sounded like a jet engine starting up!

I cheated and got someone in to do most of it. I might have had a go but I think, watching him, that I would have missed a lot out and would have been in a state of panic. The main reason though, was time - being part-time it just wasnt feasible to do it myself

 

The fan doesnt kick in straight away but when it does, it has quite a high note, whereas my older one starts up immediately in a lower register - together they are quite something!

I have a ML350 as a file server , bought it new last year at a pretty good price . Good server choice

Reason i bought it was because the school didnt have any racks ! so all servers were tower based . I then built up a 45U cabinet , and converted them all to rack . 6 servers now , and soon to be 4 virtual servers ! ( once my monster of a virtual server comes )
