EDIT: the juniper SSL appliances I use are ok.

 

John will chip in he loves his Juniper LAN over its previous Netgear LAN, life is just much better and such a nice bit of kit

I have experience of Cisco for the past 10 years and it just works wonderfully well, saying that I too would move to Juniper infrastructure for the future of our school.

 

Get the design right and the infrastructure should last for years without changing.

 

Financial restraints keeps schools from having the best equipment available to make them cutting edge and sometimes, only in a few instances do you find that finance has not been a factor and the design has been slightly overkill in some respects for the nature of the business.

Our core at one of the schools are years old Cisco 3750 stacked switches and still do their jobs great with solid speed, performance and reliability. Its all about what you buy, our D-Link and Netgear filth lasted a couple of years max before becoming more trouble than it was worth.

My Netgear was good kit and wasn't creating issues, just we had outgrown that kit due to change in requirements of the school for what we do and how we did it, such as BYOD, more bandwidth required and the fact that Netgear switches didn't seem to bond connections correctly despite everything we tried.

 

As a result we replaced everything and re-wired some areas to remove the ever common "core" > switch > switch > switch > switch which was happening (or even "core" > "next core" > switch > switch > switch) and took the opportunity to look at a range of makes and options, these were put out for pricing and the Juniper Solution from @Net-Ctrl was the best value solution and has been bulletproof and when I have had moment of changed needed the support from Net-Ctrl has been excellent and well worth the money

 

We did do all our own re-cabling and laying out and re-designing of the layout with them, so we no longer, bar one room (which won't exist in 6 weeks time) have any switch>switch>switch>switch it is all Core > Edge much better performance and does everything we throw at it

My core switch is an old 3550 12G which has been superb throughout its life, all the edge switches are either 3550 catalyst 48 port with 2 Gbic upload to the core or 3560 catalyst 48 port all have the enhanced IOS which gives access to all the Cisco protocol goodies which deliver great service. Coupled with OM3 fibre it has even allowed us to hang our 30 CCTV cameras off it (At a cost of 10Mb bandwith) but with no detriment to the LAN.

 

Great kit but I do feel the future for our school is Juniper.

Yea, great equipment that lasts forevery but we're going hp now for new stuff. Would consider Juniper but it is yet another brand with zero supply chain and support - comparitivly - here in NZ so not even worth consideration.

Awww baby core EX4200's x4 here (one is the 24port fibre the other 3 are the 48 port copper with 10G links) very shiny kit, I know that @Soulfish misses his even bigger core that was stacked with linecards but had more 0's than my keyboard will let me type in the time to finish this post....

Yes the EX2200's are only baby's BUT fantastic bits of kit, I imagine the 4200's to be even better than the 22's but the 22's are amazing!

I do miss my twin EX8200's :'( The cisco 4500's just aren't comparable :'(.

 

Having two EX8200's linked with VRRP was very very cool. Being able to reboot one and watch everything failover to the alternative with perhaps 1 or 2 loss of pings was great . Did have a few 0's in the price, but not as many as you may think with the discounts we got given

I'm sure your place robbed a bank to get them EX8200s, although the deal for our Juniper was also brilliant the whole package was excellent value full credit to Mark Power @Net-Ctrl for that one I think EX8200s are a bit too much OTT for schools though

For most a stack of EX4200/4500's will give what's needed...but I think we're a bit OT now
