Popular Post CyberNerd Posted May 31, 2012 Popular Post Posted May 31, 2012 Having recently moved to a commercial ISP after enduring several years of the RM/LEA network dropping out occasionally without explanation I was surprised to receive a couple of emails today: Start of Outage: 31-05-2012 09:50:01 End of Outage: 31-05-2012 09:50:04 Total Downtime: 0d 0h 0m 03s Outage Overview: A fibre link within our London network experienced a brief loss of signal, consequently impacting services. Impact Level: Services hard down for 3 seconds. I have accepted their "sincerest apologies for the inconvenience this may have caused" For 3 secs !. Our LEA team wouldn't event pick up the phone if it was down for over half an hour !!! 5
jamesfed Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 I don’t always agree with you @CyberNerd but….. +1 for canning RM! 1
m25man Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 You are privileged, we recently had an outage of over 15 Hrs after a BT engineer inadvertently reprogrammed a switch at the exchange. It took the ISP that long to determine the fault was actually at their end after spending most of the day trying to blame our network or equipment! Eventualy after 6 weeks of complaints and threats to cancel the service we got £700 compensation for the days outage. Thats what a 99.99% SLA does for you.
CyberNerd Posted May 31, 2012 Author Posted May 31, 2012 Thats what a 99.99% SLA does for you. Indeed. The fact that our LA couldn't offer an SLA or offer out of hours support put them out of the tender. 1
sonofsanta Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 I saw that email this morning, did make me smile not sure if anyone would have noticed, but I'm not going to complain about more information! Having been on Vaioni for coming up 18 months, now, they have always been excellent about warning before planned downtime or explaining afterwards, and they are genuinely improving their reliability as well.
synaesthesia Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 It wasn't even their fault LiNX had fitted new Juniper kit at 6am yesterday. A few hours later, LiNX had massive broadcast storms. It DDoS'd itself out of the sky. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Juniper = fail.
cpjitservices Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 Its not Juniper that have failed... It's the guys configuring the kit that fail. 3
X-13 Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 It's the guys configuring the kit that fail. It's like I always say... "It is not enough to succeed. Others must fail."

sonofsanta Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 @CyberNerd when with Vaioni. AFAIK. The email mentioned was from Vaioni, cos I got it as well. Unless other ISPs had a similar downtime for the same reason.
CyberNerd Posted June 1, 2012 Author Posted June 1, 2012 Yes. Our ISP is Vaioni. They have provided an excellent service, and this wasn't even their fault.
glennda Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 Zen as had an outage for a while yesterday which was a peer down in London - i guess it was all related.
synaesthesia Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 No, Juniper *is* fail. It's turgid crap and always has been. Buggy software, memory leaks, it's always been a nightmare - unless it's improved drastically. I rate Dlink over Juniper. That's how bad it is.
andydis Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 I rate Dlink over Juniper # I'm sorry but I strongly disagree with your view on this, Seriously DLINK over Juniper? maybe for home use yes but commercially no.
glennda Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 got a feeling @john will have something to say about that! hes got an entire juniper lan! EDIT: the juniper SSL appliances I use are ok.
Davit2005 Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 Other week we went down to 0.3Mbs speed, our ISP said it was something on our network taking the bandwidth. We spoke to another department in the ISP later on in the week who siad there was a technical fault and they couldn't deal with the speed issue till that was resolved. Turned out to be a tree branch hanging on the cable causing a bad connection. Would of been easier to find fault if internet had failed completely, a whole week wasted :-( .
TronXP Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 I have my new junior school all on juniper and am moving my main school and sixthform over to juniper over the next few years, I also use there SSG appliances and so far they have been excellent. I am moving from D-Link to Juniper and there is no way I would rate D-Link above juniper.
cpjitservices Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 (edited) DLINK over Juniper... I strongly disagree.... Juniper is the worlds leading vendor of IBR's (Internet backbone routers) infact nearly every core / backbone internet provider use Juniper at the core! - I could lsit at least 10 Communications Providers that Juniper at the core and you'll be connected to it no doubt! Do a treaceroute - you'll see that nearly every hop hits a Juniper and the odd Cisco, I even pick Juniper over Cisco! Anything in traceroute with ae-EBR, ae-EDGE, or ae-CORE is a Juniper - everything else is either Cisco or foundry. I will admit a few months back when there was a bug in the JunOS software which caused IBR's to core dump... that will NEVER happen again and to be fair Cisco have had similar cock ups a few more times than Juniper! The problem is... Juniper is very heavily Linux/BSD based in the OS - not everybody is comfortable with that and make mistakes - actually it's probably the most stable routing OS on the market. We are entirely Juniper here too apart from the Cisco 2950 in my office soon to be replaced by ..... A Juniper! No, Juniper *is* fail. It's turgid crap and always has been. Buggy software, memory leaks, it's always been a nightmare - unless it's improved drastically. I rate Dlink over Juniper. That's how bad it is. Edited June 1, 2012 by cpjitservices
GrumbleDook Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 Its not Juniper that have failed... It's the guys configuring the kit that fail. Guns don't kill people, people kill people ...
GrumbleDook Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 Of course ... the RBC didn't have an issue here because we peer onto multiple points!
synaesthesia Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 Jesus christ - do any of you people understand sarcasm and exagguration?
sonofsanta Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 Guns don't kill people, people kill people ... I think you'll find that rappers do. 3
cpjitservices Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 Apologies - didn't realize ..... bad day day today! - However t'is Friday and have a lonnggggg weekend with Mon and Tues off! Jesus christ - do any of you people understand sarcasm and exagguration?
synaesthesia Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 No worries, will join you on that one - people moaning because *something* is being flakey. And we've no idea what, other than every time it happens we eliminate one or two possibilities :| Joys. Edubeer required after work!
