Used to have both MS and Novell qualifications. Have not kept them up since Windows 2000 server and Novell 4.11. Too long in the tooth to bother these days.

Started studying. Time + money in short supply but would love to finish it. Though with a new OS every 3 years hard to keep up.

Paid for materials but been too busy with work and family to sit down and do it.

 

I see myself as a network manager in 5 years time but need a job that will help me with experience on servers etc.

Do you think it helps with jobs/etc? I have MCSA, MCTS, MCP & CCENT but I only find that agencies give a monkeys, some people value that you've spent your own time to do the qualifications, some don't. I do need to upgrade though to 2008 server though!

I think the course that I went through was very benificial and having a trainee who was very knowledgeful was extremely helpfull.

Lol... that's you and me both I started out onNovell 3 and then started on NT4 server certification and they bought out windows server 2000 so I gave up at that point it's just a merry go round I decided I dident want to be part of. I learn what I need to do my job.

 

Even with all the latest certs at our age who would give us a job in the current climate?

No, I know what you mean. Hard to pretend you're dynamic when you reach this age. My qualifications were gained at my previous school and helped earn me my job here, but there comes a point when you ask why you're continuing to study and go in for exams. I put in my time learning new things, I keep current. It might be an issue if I was looking for another job, but I'm not. I also started on Novell 3, then it was 4 because of the GUI, and you had to make the step up from NT4 to 2000...frankly, there's more to life now.

 

Plus, my internal hard drive is full and slow and all the defragging in the world isn't helping!

I'm MCITP:SA and the fact I have it has landed me a few contract roles, it's nice to have on your CV and attracts interest. Been meaning to go for EA but finding the time is the problem.

MCTIP is the cert I would go for if I was going to seek certification. In fact I have all the Microsoft study books for the exam but use them as a reference rather than for taking the exams.

 

If your young and a Windows server admin this is the cert I would suggest just make sure you go for the enterprise admin MCTIP when you study rather than just the server admin.

Im MCTS'ed to the eyeballs, It means I have an awareness of most ms technologies and gets my CV noticed

Part of my OU degree is going to have me studying the materials for 70-640 and 70-642 so I'll do the additional one myself and sit the three exams (can't remember the third modules number), hope to have it done by this time next year (the OU module in question doesn't start until October)

Was looking at doing an MCTS course just to get the MS logo but not at the moment... got enough to worry about with Summer projects without adding piles of study to the list. Best reserved for when the days are dark and cold

I've got MCTS, MCSA (Systems Administrator - not the new bloody Solutions Associate!!), MCP, ACSP and currently working towards CCNA. Will try to get Server 2008 MCITP if I can find the time.

I have a 20 metres breaststroke certificate if that's any good.

I have MCITP:EA and MCITP:EDST.

 

It was worth it just for the satisfaction of completing it. Definitely helps to get to interview stage (along with experience) in the current climate.

I have MCP MCTS MCSA MCSE MCITP EA CCENT and yes they do get you in the door especially with agencies, but lets face it if you don't use it you loose it, however I get more phone calls offering Linux work than you would believe and I have no Linux qualifications. The one thing above all else that has helped me is being DV cleared.

 

While in Oz it was my Microsoft certs that worked for me.

I have the compulsory MCSE (that includes MCP and MCSA) and the certification path is a never ending story, we have to keep on upgrading all the time, now Server 2008, Exchange, etc. In addition you need to add some specialist certification focus on a particular area like CCNA or Linux as mentioned, or VMware, buf

 

I decided three years ago to stop the certification roller coaster and focus on getting a degree in Computing, I believe the academic insight that you gain on the degree path should really glue with the technical bits acquired during experience and practical exams of the certifications... not sure yet if I’m right!

I got the old track: MCP - MCDST - MCSA - MCSA: S - MCSA: E - MCSE , etc...

The newer track: MCTS (Multiple) - MCITP (Multiple)

As well as the newest track: MCSA:2008

 

Not sure if I want to gain the new MCSE:2008 or just wait until Server 2012 or just complete my PGCert (will take 4 years, as I've just started, plus doing 1 module a year).

I didn't concentrate on professional certification until I finished my degree. Now a days, most certifications are valid for either 3 years or the support life of the product, whereas the degree (or any academic qualification, eg HNC/HND/CertHE/DipHE and any postgrad qualification PGCert/PGDip/Masters) is for life.
