Real world Unifi test coming up after lunch

All 40 netbooks in use at same time for some whizzy Ofsted pleasing lessons (plus about 6 laptops) across the school after lunch.

 

I'll either be a hero or a villain !

 

(20 of them arrived Friday and were imaged over the weekend so have never actually been used before )

Got 5 at the moment (primary)- 2 serving the junior resource area at one end of school and 3 others dotted around infants.

 

AP limit set to 20 connections each.

 

Intended having 1 per class eventually but since we only had 20 netbooks last week - I thought these 5 would suffice

 

Head suddenly deciding on Mon that he wanted another 20, Tues I got a quote, we ordered Wed and then we got Ofsted call on Thur and our supplier delivered Friday and I spent Sat/Sun imaging them! (There's a song in there somewhere )

Fingers crossed it all goes well. I ran an INSET session where 8 laptops and 12 chromebooks all connected to 1 unifi AP and accessed the same shared google document. All went smoothly - hope you have the same experience.

What sort of throughput and streaming are we talking here @SimpleSi? How many clients did you successfully get on each AP and other than getting on the internet and printing, did they have to download anything or stream?

 

I am very interested to know how these stand up in a classroom - we have tested in the office but doesn't really help in a "real world" situation. Saw your post and thought great, someone is testing them but I am still not sure.

 

It sounds like how I test my internet at home - it works and I am happy!

Just simple Maths/Phonics websites and printing charts from Excel and images from Dazzle so not too strenous

 

My main delight is that NONE of the netbooks hesitated to log on and map the server network drive and run my WPKG startup script

 

Its not unusual that 1 out of 15 in a lesson will not do this and need to be power-cycled (or in my bad Ruckus experience about 1 in 10 )

 

I did check that max clients/AP was being obeyed

Bit more of a test this today - teacher suddenly realised they needed Smart notebook on the netbooks (the old laptops had it) but luckily I've a simple smart7 (we don't use 10) WPKG package and I got it installed in the 20 mins she was doing the lesson introduction

 

Saving wmvs from Photostory also worked flawlessly this morning from 17 netbooks (I'd normally suggest saving locally and copying afterwards but teacher decided to go straight for it)

 

And an update on load balancing - all netbooks laptops were deployed in Juniors and the 2 APs serving that part of the school did exceed the 20 limit I setup but thats much more preferable than a client not connecting so very very happy with Unifi now and would 100% recommend them for normal primaries - they are a no-brainer choice for them

 

Hoping to bring one along and run the software on my laptop to show people at the conf

Unifi Pro landed in port at Oakland CA on 23/05 - they are on the way to US Distributors now.

There is an EU container due into to Valencia any day now, so it looks like they may well be here in time to spoil the summer party planning after all

Its a shame I only have a handful of A/N capable clients to test it with but I will stick the etherscope on it later with a reflector and stress it to the max throughput to see if I can break it.

For those not knowing what access points we are talking about, they are these - Unifi | Ubiquiti Networks, Inc.

 

We have just done a proof of concept for a leisure centre in Essex before rolling out to some of their other sites. It is performing really well and within the first 4 days the 4 access points had already handled close to 500 unique devices with no issues.

 

The rate limiting on users joining has been working well too. All connected to a triple bonded ADSL solution.

 

So simple, but it just works.
