Pete10141748 Posted March 23, 2012 Author Posted March 23, 2012 (edited) The crate is locked in my server room (not the office pictured above, the SR has no windows) when not in use and only I have the key. The crate is given out to a class for the day, and I get it back each afternoon. During the day they all leave their laptop trollies open anyway for a "quick access" at the pupils' want & need so no difference there. Not the most ideal solution but the safety of both above methods is pretty much the same, except that anyone poking around the school after-hours wouldn't know / be able to see the iPads stored inside the SR, as opposed to the obvious tech-trolley in the hallway. Mr.Ben Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 I've got an 'Option 2' here - biggest problem was disappearing chargers and Apple Leads Me and the DT Technician created a board which is attached a third of the way up the crate and can only be removed with a screw driver to make removing the chargers inconvienient at best, and it seems to have done the trick.

localzuk Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 I'd be going for a dedicated trolley as option 2 lends itself to damaged ipads, damaged power leads, missing power leads, easier theft, and fire risk. From what I've been told in both my last school and current school, loose multi adapters are not allowed due to H&S too. Howeverm £300 for a trolley seems cheap. I'd've expected £800+ for one.
dgsmith Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 Well I am one of the most thrifty people around I personally would opt for a setup based around the trolley option. I agree with localzuk above that £300 seems reasonable for a trolley, and that is speaking from a school myself that hasn't bought much new stuff recently and that struggles to provide us with any realistic budget. Sticking them in a plastic box that looks better suited to freshly washed clothes doesn't appeal to me as a suitable approach in a youthful educational environment, particularly for rather pricey units!

mrb-solutions Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 I agree, We went with solution 1. And instead of the power adapters charging the units we have them powered from a big USB hub and cables are neat. Works a treat. I can post a picture if anyone is interested?

A proper one with a proper power supply built in would be "best answer", but that one isn't much better than the plastic crate. Guess where I keep my "data logging only" laptops? In a plastic crate! However, our general purpose science lappys do live in Lapsafe trolleys. 1
RJohnson91 Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 If your happy with just sticking them in a plastic box, could you not ask Tech real nicely and get them to make you up a small wooden 'shelving' big enough to place the ipads into, multi sockets on the back, job done. looks abit better. Then students or staff collect the ipads? Ryan
Edu-IT Posted June 10, 2012 Posted June 10, 2012 Can I ask what the fire risk is? Older LapCabby trolley's have two extension leads going into them, which is just what is going on here? Except with the LapSafe they go in to a very small compartment at the bottom with very little ventilation. But that's another rant.
