Heya guys,

What method do you do to search for MP3s. .exe's .zips etc?

Do you use windows search or do you use a specific program?

Also - What sort of "things" do you delete, i did my first very quick search of pupils area and i discovered games, KEYGENS!!!, and alot of MP3's

Should i delete these without notification to the users? What do you guys do?

Cheers Mart!

I have my storage server's file scanning feature set to scan for EXE, COM, BAT, JS and other executable files. It automatically deletes them as it finds them with no notification to users. The students know they shouldn't have those sorts of files on the school network.

About once every couple of weeks we scan for MP3, WMV, WMA, AVI and MPG files. Anything that is blatently music or non educational is deleted. We have to be careful with these files, as students legitimately have files with these extentions as part of some of the courses they are doing.

Every now and then we scan for JPG images, and vet the sorts of images that are in users folder. This is very time consuming, so maybe gets done once a term or so.

All of the manual searches are a simple windows search, does the job for us.

I suppose it depends on your AUP, what ever you set out on this dictates what you can do with the files if you find them.

As above any vbs, .com, .bat etc we delete without notice because they should not have these files.

MP3 are a bit of a nightmare because they say they use them for presentations etc. But if i see complete albums on there i delete them as well.

Use Windose search, *.exes won't run on my CC3 system anyway so they are useless, I delete them.

MP3 and *.avi etc, I talk to the staff member involved and point to the AUP which tells all they should not be storing personal stuff on the network drives (which is kind of the point of the exercise).

Just searched for MP3, WAV, WMV, WMA and MPG files on my system, and found 3933 files, totalling 14GB! That's in about 4 weeks since we last purged them.

I dred to think what we'd end up with if we didn't delete them regularly.

I use windirstat as it has a graphical representation of all the files as well so you can see who is taking up all the space with what files.

We just use a batch file to go through and delete any files we don't want.

Any chance you can post this batch file please?

This would be very appreciated!
