Zoom7000 Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 I was flicking through the channels on cable yesterday and came across Ftn who were showing repeats of The Krypton Factor. I got all nostalgic and sat down to watch it. After the show had ended I was amazed at just how hard some of the challenges were and the first thing to come to my mind was how gameshows nowadays just don't come anywhere near the quality and difficulty that this show was, and some of those contestants were bloody cleaver! I was trying to think what comes close in modern times, but hardly anything mixes knowledge with physical ability like The Krypton Factor did. Gordon Burns is presenting BBC News North West these days, sporting a lot more wrinkles on his face Ah the good old days!
webman Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 I used to watch this as a kid (very young) and only remembered the ariel slide at the end of the assault course, and it's been great to watch it again on FTN - I've been watching it for a while now. My 8 year old brother even likes it They don't make 'em like they used to - there's nothing on TV now that compares to Krypton Factor, The Crystal Maze and The Gladiators (went to see that in Birmingham in about 1994 )
Zoom7000 Posted May 16, 2007 Author Posted May 16, 2007 Yeah, I was around 5 - 10 years old when I remember watching this, which is why it amazes me now as to how damn hard it was.
ConTheITGuy Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 there's nothing on TV now that compares to Krypton Factor, The Crystal Maze and The Gladiators (went to see that in Birmingham in about 1994 ) All of which are now on either FTN or Challenge. I hate Gladiators, the Mrs loves it! Although even she is getting an bit bored of it - has anyone else noticed they seem to keep showing the same episodes over and over with Phil the martial arts guy! Andy
krisd32 Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 I loved the krypton factor i thought the flight simulator at night was the hardest bit! and possibly the most fun. the aerial slide looked fun aswell but the flight sim did it for me! Kris

Kris Was lucky enough to fly a Sea King simulator in my days in the RAF, as well as a real Gazelle helicopter... the simulator was harder!!

I used to love that programme when I was a kid. I can remember even trying to record the theme music by holding a cassette player in front of the TV! Mind you, I was only about 10 at the time
cooper Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 The Crystal Maze Arcade Game. Spent hours on this down my local..Makes me want to get a tracker ball...
Friez Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 Southampton used to have a 'crystal maze' type place it was a bizarre series of computerised puzzles and games involving avoiding infrared lasers and the like. Very similar to the actual crystal maze except more computerised in order to survive general public consumption. So in a roundabout way kinda played it!
ConTheITGuy Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 We used to have one in Blackpool. I never went, but it sounded similar to yours from what I heard. Andy
Stese Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 I wonder if any of the older Edugeeks have actually been on the show...
rush_tech Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 I used to watch it all the time. I actually did the assualt course back in my army days. The zip line at the end was down for repair, so we had to run through that mini lake at the end It was good fun though
john Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 We used to have one in Blackpool. I never went, but it sounded similar to yours from what I heard. Andy I was in it, well one of thse branch thingys, on holiday once, we were the winning family of the day as well Cannot remember the prize though, but we got a cool certificate somewhere.
googlemad Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 Quite funny how there were so many fancy titled computer experts on the show over the years. I always used to love how it went 'And the winner with a Krypton Factor of 40 is the computer programmer from Hull, Joe Bloggs!'
GrumbleDook Posted May 20, 2007 Posted May 20, 2007 Southampton used to have a 'crystal maze' type place it was a bizarre series of computerised puzzles and games involving avoiding infrared lasers and the like. Very similar to the actual crystal maze except more computerised in order to survive general public consumption. So in a roundabout way kinda played it! That place was fun. Out bowling first, then a bit of Quasar followed by the Crystal Maze (though I think they ditched the Quasar section eventually to expand the Crystal Maze ... ) My missus and I were only just talking about that place last week as we are working out what to do over the half-term and part of it involves a trip to her folks in Weston.
GrumbleDook Posted May 20, 2007 Posted May 20, 2007 I used to watch it all the time. I actually did the assualt course back in my army days. The zip line at the end was down for repair, so we had to run through that mini lake at the end It was good fun though It is a shame to believe that to do Army assault courses now you have to have a walk past when dry, a slow run through when dry and then a repeated sessions on the 'difficult' obstacles. It was more fun when they just pointed you at the start and told you that if you hit your head make sure the helmet doesn't damage the obstacle. The zip line was the bit I hated ... getting a soaked arse and then finishing the course and waiting 40mins until you could get back and not being allowed to run around to keep warm and get dry.
