I've abandoned my morals. :(

After having about a month or so without playing a game or two on the PC, I was suddenly back in the mood for some classic FPS action and decided to reinstall COD:MW on the off chance a server or two was kicking around on the net. Turns out there are loads of them about so I spent the past week remembering how good MW was. I even had my profile backed up so continued from lvl 48 and hit 55 a few days ago (golden degal, awww yea!). :)

When MW2 was announced, and it came to light that there would be no dedicated servers for the PC edition, and after hearing reports from people who bought it that it became rather "console like", I wiped my hands of the entire series vowing never to buy it again. I was glad I did, especially as the reports for Black Ops, and then MW3 were 'it's all the same old same old stuff'.

Anyhoo, I replayed the campaign of MW and just remembered how good the single player games in COD really are and wondered if MW2 was worth it jst for single player. Before I knew what was happening, I had purchased MW2 in Steam and was giving the SP game a good seeing to. Seriously good stuff so far, really intense! After a hour or so, I even went as far as to test the waters with the multi-play mode. Worryingly, I found it rather fun, and despite the absence of dedicated servers, I had no lag at all. The only annoyance was mid game, everything froze and COD had to find a new host and transfer everyone over to it. 10 seconds later and everything resumed where it left off. maybe I will have to reconsider my stance for Black-ops/MW3...

Black Ops is ace online. All this dedicated server jive was just the 1337 getting in a whinge, it works fine.

Speaking of going back in time, you can still play Counter-Strike happily against '0000s of users and it's as good as it ever was.

This is very true..... Even now I like to log on every few weeks for a CS battle...None of the enjoyment has waned...only the time to do it has!

I'm not sure about that!

CS:Beta has been available for months??? I've been playing it for 6 months, at least!

Really?! How did you get it? And more importantly, what's it like?!?!

From the offical site:

Q) How can I get into the beta?

A) Be active in the CS community. We are giving keys out to active players both in game and in the community. We will also have a survey up in the coming weeks that can help you get your name on the list for a key.

News posted on the official blog on 14th Feb:

While we aren’t ready to give everyone access right now. We do have plans to get more people in the Beta. To help us select the next batch of players, we will be releasing a short survey in a few weeks that you can fill out and get on the list for a Beta key.

Mostly true, except finding a UK server running anything other than dust or dust2 is seriously hard work with the Steam browser, and ASE has long gone.

I'll have to have a look at home....

Though the more I think about it....it was probably CS:Source!

Sorry!

Hehehe. No probs. Would love to get my hands on a key! :)

Wish I waited for MW2. Just popped into game and Black Ops is down for £30 to £24.99 on PC. :(

The UKCS servers are great fun. Custom maps but always full! :)

See?

Now you've re-awakened something in me which means I will have to go home and stick CS on!

Although, secretly, I'd like to go back in time for another bash at TF! Playing engineer, setting your sentry gun up, and smashing the opposition to bits.....Them's the days!!!

I bricked it at MANY points in that game!! Loved it from the moment it came out. Great atmospherics, and possibly my favourite game of all time!

Ever try FEAR 2/3? If so, any good and just as scary?

I've WANTED to try them, but never got round to it.

Possibly because I don't want sequels to ruin the original game.

I'll never forget running around on the balcony trying to find a way down, only to accidentally press the trigger and blow away the skylight beneath my feet........so THAT'S how you get down!!!!!

On another note, if you like scary games, try Amnesia: The Dark Descent (available on Steam). Last time I played, I lost 3 hours and woke up in a ball in the corner sucking my thumb. ;)

A demo is available on steam too so get a bit of "try before you buy" on the go. ;)

True, no guns or explosives, but still a scary mind%&*! of a game if played in the dark with headphones/speakers turned up. :)

In a similar vein to the developer's previous games, Amnesia is an exploration-based adventure game played from a first-person perspective. The game retains the physical object interaction used in the Penumbra series, allowing for physics-based puzzles and interactions such as opening doors and fixing machinery.[6] Few in-game objects are operated by toggle; to open a door, for instance, the player must hold down a mouse button and then push (or pull) the mouse, and thus the door, open. This gives the player unprecedented stealth, allowing them to peek out a barely-opened door or open it slowly to sneak away, but also adds to the player's sense of helplessness, as it is now entirely possible to attempt to push open a "pull" door whilst danger approaches from behind.

In addition to a health indicator, Daniel's sanity must be managed. Being in darkness too long, witnessing unsettling events, or staring at monsters will reduce Daniel's sanity, causing visual and auditory hallucinations and drawing the attention of monsters. Light sources help restore sanity, and if none are available Daniel may use tinderboxes to ignite candles in wall sconces and candelabra, or deploy an oil-burning lantern found near the beginning of the game. However, the number of tinderboxes and the amount of oil available are both limited, and standing in a light source also makes the player more noticeable to monsters. The player must balance the amount of time Daniel spends in light and shadow. Sanity is fully restored once Daniel completes an objective or progresses the game's story. It may also be restored by staying in the shadows until Daniel passes out, but this leaves him extremely vulnerable to any nearby monsters.

If a monster spots Daniel, it will chase him until he's out of sight. If spotted, Daniel must flee, as Amnesia does not give the player access to weapons. Daniel must find hiding places or barricade doors with rocks, chairs and other obstacles; unfortunately, monsters are capable of tearing down doors in their path and kicking obstacles out of the way, and move extremely fast once they have spotted their prey. Players can also choose to hide Daniel in the shadows, at cost to sanity. Monsters who lose sight of Daniel will search for him for a time, but will eventually leave and vanish. At several points in the game, Daniel must lure them into destroying an obstacle in his path.
