[android] Rooting your Android phone...

I've tried looking around the interweb or advice on this and seem to be struggling finding clear guidance on how to do this. Has anyone done this and used a particular useful guide? Any resources welcomed.

 

In particular, my phone is an HTC Desire HD so steps for this particular model would be awesome.

When it comes to installing CyanogenMOD, choose your distro of choice (although Cyanogen is a great first ROM if you've not done this before - I ended up going back to it in the end!)

 

PS: HTC Ace was the Desire HD's codename, hence the wiki title

 

PPS: I've never rooted a Desire HD, only a Desire, but it was simple and easy to do. One thing to watch out for that scared the hell out of me the first time is if you get into a boot cycle - you probably just need to wipe user data (come back here if you get that problem and I'll dig out how you do that, it's literally just a menu option in the bootloader you'll end up with though)

err IIRC got my stuff from cyanogenmod and wikipedia.

then put a rom on your sd card, load into clockwork and install rom.

 

loads of instructions just cant get to them at school lol.

also, you may be able to root your existing rom, using super one click, but better try AMT [TOOL] [15/07/11] AMT v1.8.5 - Sim Unlock, S-OFF, Downgrade - Added Auto Detection! - xda-developers

I have the same phone , i looking to root, i want to follow this post with Advanced Ace hack, in this they ask to read "EFFEN Manual". what is that ? where do i get to read that? im never rooted before

I think they just want you to read the AAHK thread here before posting any questions (which may have already been answered).

after reading all these, I spent three hours last night rooting my htc desire and installing cyanogenmod onto it (as its nearing the end of contract - im a bugger for not playing with stuff while I still have warranty).

 

Had a heart stopping moment when using evo as the connection between my PC and the phone dipped at a crucial point because I didnt have the phone flat on the desk(the connection with my USB cable has always been a little dodgy unless the phone is absolutely still)

 

I wish I had done it sooner now, on balance, it feels like I have a new phone now, free of all the O2 clutter on it, I used freeyourandroid for part of it and the xda developers forum, what I would urge anyone thinking of doing it, is to do a LOOOOOT of reading before attempting it, not all sites give you the full picture at once.

After lot of Read I Rooted My Desire HD last night. i found EFFEN Manual inside the ACE Hack Kit. very useful one and a must read. I was running Android 2.3.5 and sense 3. it asked me to downgrade to sense 2.1. after i continued my Rooting process again. 1st attempt didn't work phone won't restart. did the root again all fine went well. the flashed the ROM to advanced Revolution HD 6.3. i love it and good experience.

Late update to this thread, however I finally decided to root my Desire HD yesterday as it's out of it's one year warranty. I used these tools here: How to Root the HTC Desire HD - xda-developers

 

Again, read the 'effenin manual' in the tools and then kicked off. I had to downgrade my ROM first and wipe all phone data which I was fine with as I had my Contacts in Outlook. The downgrade went through with no problems, so I ran the tools again to root the phone, and it completed without any problems at all! It did exactly as it said on the tin which I was chuffed with.

 

After that, I tried flashing a new ROM (Android Revolution HD) as per the YouTube video which also completed successfully!

 

After playing with that for an hour or so, I download the ROM Manager app so I could back up the current ROM as it was working perfectly. I then went on to try the latest stable version (7.2) of the Cyanogen mod for my phone. Again, it installed without any issues, however I could not access the Cyanogen Mod menu in the settings, it just kept crashing back to the home screen. Also, I had no short cuts to get to phone related apps (phone, address book etc). I could get to the text app though. In the end, I restored the Android Revolution HD Backup and have downloaded the 7.1 ROM of Cyanogen to try later.

I was really pleased with Cyanogen initially but found quite a few annoying bugs (mainly browser related) that have soured the experience somewhat... not having search functionality in the email client is painful

 

Not long until I get a One X and then I'll stick with Sense again I think, main reason for rooting was to try and make some more space with the Desire's pitiful internal memory allocation

Turns out I copied the 7.1 ROM onto my SD card already so I've just installed it and had a play around. Seems to be working 100% so far, and must say I'm loving it! it appears so slick and smooth, and the lock screen is awesome! So nice to have a quick way to stick the phone onto silent mode!

 

The browser is not an issue for me as I use Dolphin Browser HD.
