We have a DELL 5100cn (c£450) - very quick and good quality - cheaper consumables than are other one which is an HP 4600n - this is very good but a bit pricey - tried a few of the 250-300 pound printers but never happy with the 5ppm in colour that the cheaper ones tend to kick out.

Kyocera Mita FS-C5016N about £1200 network ready, exceptional output, very speedy too

or

Epson AcuLaser C2600N about £500 network ready, not as speedy as the kyocera but still above average quality - i have one in my network at school and it does the job admirably.

We have two OKI c5100n and are very happy with them. They do print quite a glossy finish if that's something you like/don't like.

I concur. Very happy with ours and the print quality is the most vivid and glossy of any of our colour lasers.

AVOID: Xerox phaser 8400. They're prone to mechanical failure (2/2 within 18 months), they deliberately waste the toner (wax block) that they run on and the colour reproduction is often miles off (dark brown instead of bright red!)

Never been a fan of Xerox, myself. I've tried their Inkjets and they are expensive to run, the drivers are a nightmare to install and , as you mention, the colour reproduction was awful. They should definately stick to photocopiers!

Incidentally for all the conspiracy theorists, you're not actually paranoid - They really are after you!

We've just installed an Epson Aculaser C1100 network-ready colour printer. 25ppm mono, 5ppm colour. Print quality is v.good but it's using toner like there's no tomorrow.

@ ninjabeaver

Good thought, but I can assure you my capacity to consume chocolate far outstrips the Aculaser's appetite for toner, and frankly that's quite a lot ..... Consumption (of chocolate) increased significantly today as a result of carefully lifting Deskjet 970 Cxi to access serial no. on the bottom only to find myself now sporting a rather fetching BLACK INK tye-die effect pattern all over pale pink jumper. Admin. officer, and user of rogue printer, responded - "If you'd asked me, I would have told you it does that." Gee, thanks .......

Never mind the low toner supplies, send even MORE chocolate ....soon ...
