matt40k Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 If one of the files it was trying to register is locked and in the PendingFileRenameOperations, would it register it when it reboots or would it re-register the current version. If that's the case it's a "simple" task of killing the processes before upgrading.

matt40k Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 So in theory, if Capita need to replicate it they just need to : have a workstation with SIMS open, run autumn upgrade via s3. Workstation fails, reboot, SIMS works, Exams fails. Should be pretty simple to fix.

matt40k Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 Nope, happens with SOLUS3 when someone is logged in. So SOLUS3 does an update, files are locked because the application is still open, so files get replace upon reboot, old version gets registered, then DLL vs reg'd COM version is different upon reboot. So you may find it works, then you reboot and it stops working.

So is this only for the person suffering the error still being logged in to Exams whilst upgrading or is it if one person is logged into exams by leaving it on overnight and the upgrade kicks in, everyone gets hit? I've had automation error before even though I switch the machine off every night when SOLUS2 upgrades go live.

The current solution with SOLUS3 is to re-apply the update to the machine once the user is out of exams as this should fix the issue. You can’t easily do that in SOLUS2. Ideally we would look to improve SOLUS3 to handle this further but a solution hasn’t been looked at for this yet.
SouthCoastSaint Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 I have the error since the upgrade was applied on Thursday. I had shut down Sims - and definitely didn't have exams open - in fact strangely the exams officers do NOT have the problem this time. And we are using Solus 3 too.

I always get everyone out of SIMS, switch the database to SINGLE user so no one can try gaining access then apply the SIMS update, but still get the error. Only solution is to reinstall SIMS on the workstations using Exams. I contacted Capita and they say it doesnt happen to all schools and are unable to replicate the issue so only solution is to re-install.

Yup we have the same issue but only with a few users at a couple of schools. A quick reinstall of SIMS using SIMSApplicationSetup.exe does the trick. I may be stating the obvious here but did you guys know you can run SIMSApplicationSetup and install using UNC path? i.e. just run the exe and when prompted, change the SIMS Local Destination Folder to "\\computer123\c$\Program Files\SIMS\SIMS .net". Saves you getting up, going to the machine, getting user to log off etc

ITGURU Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 That seems ODD. I always get users to log out of SIMS before I do the upgrade. I then place SQL in Single User mode so that only the server can log in. Therefore exams organiser is never open. We don't use Solus 3.8. It doesnt fit in with our environment. When an update is published and a workstation is offline, it is too slow to detect and run the upgrade, resulting in Incompatible database. The current Solus 2 (double click to run the upgrade) works better for us. We've reported it multiple times to the helpdesk. Our exams lady was without the program for a few days due to this error.
jonrose Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 Just had this error appear on my machine, after manually redeploying SIMS via Solus 3 (3.8.53.0) it appears to have fixed it.

We used got the usual 'automation error' so renamed the SIMS program files folder, re-installed and all is working fine. Oh guess what the SPRING release was rolled out yesterday via Solus 2 and now the EXAMS module is broken on all the PC's that have SIMS.net ! And the LEA say they've never heard of this issue before!!!!!!!!!!! Laughable
