Was it you I was standing with at BETT this year Tony, when there was two teachers who COULD NOT POSSIBLY CONCEIVE why we'd voluntarily call ourselves geeks...?

 

after about 10 minutes of trying to explain they walked off bemused

 

I'm used to doing that every year. The first year was when Russ and I were on the ICT TRegister stand (the year before we got our own stand) and we tried to explain to people the concept of why being a geek is good.

Happened whilst I was at the stand, think I was with James at the time, trying to explain what we are about and why we do what we do! After about 10 minutes of saying we help each other for each others benefit, and do so because we want too, they were baffled about it.

Yeah, that bits fairly usual.

 

It was the word Geek that had them confused though...very odd

Lots of people don't understand that 'geek' is a good thing still. People realise it is a good thing here, as I've made it quite clear that I am a geek and that is a good thing.

Speaking of offending jokes, I see that Jordan has managed to milk a documentary out Sky Living about the joke Frankie Boyle made about her son.

 

If anything I find her actions more offensive than Boyle's joke.

Right here is a few answers/details for you all.

Currently there is no way to limit the rep button (not thanks system) to specific forums in vbulletin but it is possible for me to hack it in I *think*

The thanks system can be restricted and is restricted (no thanks in the jokes for example) but it still allows rep button which is limited more then the thanks button to prevent rep boosting.

Currently the rep button will give you more rep then a thanks. The thanks links are limited to 5 rep points which to build a huge rep can take a bit but it does allow you to multiple thank a person in the same thread unlike the rep button.

The rep button gives you +rep based on the givers rep power which is calculated based on their rep, its not a 1 for 1 system where you get 5 rep points because the person has 5, its divided out.

 

Regarding politics, I am considering making a politics forum where different rules/limits can apply as those types of debates can get very heated but should never be thought of negatively of the poster (aka I hate x user not because he is bad but because he is a tory) and that forum could have parts of the rep system disabled in it as well as possibly hiding it from google.

Seeing as vbulletin has been updated, clicking on the smiley face icon in the toolbar only shows so many emoticons, there is no next button, scroll bar or anyway of showing more so how do you see all the diff emoticons now ?

There's been a lot of discussion here, and it seems people are in favour of removing rep from non-IT forums, such as General-Chat, where this thread resides.

There have been 46 'Thanks' so far in this thread, and probably countless 'Reps' both +'ve and -'ve. Are we ready to lose all that, especially those newly appointed Double Star Generals...?

 

Reading this, got me thinking about Dark Angel, and Batman Begins, and about the effects of an EMP along the lines of some kind of apocalypse with everything starting from scratch; a clean slate....

 

What would happen if all rep, stars, stripes etc were lost? Would EG continue to be as successful and useful to its members...? Will we no longer be able to get the help we need? If so, then we need to be careful, as one determined hacker could jeapordise the entire UK education system.

Don't use public transport anymore and never had one so no. Would be good if I could re configure my engine to be a lot more economic and faster with more HP, BHP etc

To be honest, I'm happy to start again. It might ever be worth looking at that, the idea of archiving rep on a yearly basis. Those who regularly gain rep because they deserve it (through whatever means ... whether through tech posts, advice posts or fun posts) will gain rep again.

 

If nothing else it might encourage those who are a little wary of the rep system to contribute a bit more freely, thank others a bit more and share the rep around (-ve and +ve).

Actually ... bonus pedantry points to @witch.

 

Pedanticness is simply the addition of a suffix to a word to show the condition, quality or state of being something. "His pedanticness was becoming a problem as he tried to re-word the FAQ"

 

This differs from the use of 'pedantry', which people sometimes mistakenly use when they mean pedanticness, and vice versa.
