CCTV Motion detection

Been looking through the treads.

 

What we are after is 3 cameras that will record when motion is detected and then record to a computer somewhere.

 

I have see links to sites on here but dont really have a clue what to look for is there any companies out there that do this?

I'd recommend looking at the cameras Grandstream make - they can do exactly what you want, are network based, have motion detection stuff built in and record to network storage.

As far as I'm aware it doesn't have to be the camera doing the cleverness, the CCTV box can do it. We've got a Samsung SVR3200 system that has all our old cameras plugged in, and it's set up to record constantly at low quality (320x240, 5fps iirc) and leap into high quality (full size 30fps) when it detects motion in specific areas. It's set up to ignore movement from the roads and trees etc.

 

If you've already got cameras, it's worth looking at.

Indeed - if you've got old style, analogue type cameras, then it is down to the box. But if you want IP CCTV style cameras, then a lot of it is built into the camera itself, with no 'PVR' type device but using a simple NAS box instead.

If you are looking for recording software for your server take a look at Xprotect Go from Milestone it's free for up to 8 cameras after that you'll have to upgrade to one of their other versions.

We have a mix of Axis and ACTi IP cameras and do all the motion detection stuff on the server software (this obviously is alot more than just a server for storage). I find you can configure more on the software and means it doesn't matter if you have cameras that support motion detection or not. Yes, hardware-based motion detection is probably more accurate but you can still mask any areas such as road, trees etc so not a big issue.

 

We use the icatcher software - not too bad, does what we want but was really cheap when we bought it.

I use Mobotix Q24 Hemispherical dome cameras in the ICT suites.

Very neat, record 4 days worth of footage to the internal SDHC card, and upload via FTP overnight to central server to reduce network traffic.

Great touch is the ability to enable the VoIP phone in the camera, to remotely B#@*&ck idiots trashing the ICT Suites, when staff forget to lock them. :-)

We use the mobotrix Q24 here as well and they will do what you want. The cameras ain't too expensive and the software I believe is free to download.

All of the recommendations above are good however the industry is about to be thrown into chaos by those incredibly clever chaps at Ubiquiti and their production teams in China.

They have already upset all of the big players in the wireless market crushing big names on price and features now they are about to do the same with the cctv market.

3 x Megapixel cameras for less than £300 with a Dome and a Micro on the way.

 

The software is free as well, I have mine arriving next week and will be happy to share my experiences as soon as I have run them up.

 

I have no lead time on bulk availability as it can take six weeks to get a pallet here from Hong Kong but I see these selling faster than Greggs Sausage Rolls in the cash strapped Education Market in the same way that Unifi is with WiFi.
