Hey all,

 

We were recently shown this software called impero. Its very much like netops. It has remote control locking of workstations broadcasting single display to loads. Has thumbnail view but the best feature of network admins is it does a form of keylogging. For example you can put in the keyword "adult" if the word is in its bad word filter it will block it and report to the teacher.

 

Its great for teachers aswell as us guys

It's actually a very nice program. We found it last year. We trialled it for 30 days at the end of the summer term and were so impressed we bought it over the summer. VERY reasonably priced also. Just an upfront license fee for the one server app, each client license and console license. No yearly renewal fees, except for maintenance which was around a £100 if i remember correctly, will get that confirmed.

 

One of the best things i like it is the support and fact that they are willing to listen to suggestions and try and implement them as soon as they can. Think of an idea (sensible one), email to them or suggest it on their forums and as soon as they can it's distributed automatically in the next update. We've found them very helpful whenever we've had minor issues.

We bought Impero for our school and have never regretted it. One particular joy is the fact that they are still willing to develop it based on suggestions from other users. The new version is due out over the Easter holidays - and since updates are free (providing you pay the annual support fee) I can't wait.

 

To be fair, we haven't had much experience of other similar software packages available. But we felt that, since it works and we can afford it, we might as well use it.

Sounds similar to Netsupport school, might have a look at impero though as we're trialing NSS at the moment!

Not tried it yet but the quotation for it (400 licenses, 1 server, 10 consoles) came back £1100 cheaper than the equivalent Net support one..

 

I'll have a look at it next week if I get a chance.

Well we have netops in one of our rooms but only really saw it as a benefit to teaching staff. But with impero we are able to monitor all kids activities and spot the little hackers trying to use command prompt

 

We are going for 300 workstations and 5 consoles and 1 server well worth the money.

We've been with Impero since one of it's very earliest releases.

They (the makers) do listen, they do implement stuff that you ask for (within reason) and are very helpful not only on their forum but in any kind of support.

 

Can well recommend it.

We bought Impero at the end of last year after trialing it for a lengthy period of time. It is 'teacher' friendly in use and has been well received by the staff. I would endorse comments made by others in this thread, the developers are very approachable and responsive in dealing with problems as well as recommendations for product enhancements.

 

It has some very good logging capabilities which we have used to great effect in identifying misuse of resources at my school. Those responsible were in awe when presented with the evidence of their misdeeds.

This all looks extremely similar if not identical to Net Support School but with a cheaper price tag. Are there any issues with students logging off and disconnecting their sessions as they could with NSS?

That was based on 200 clients Direct from impero.

If a pupil logs off and ends session, you can't see what they;ve been doing in the console as that only shows real-time connections. However you log on to the server and run the impero log viewer. That stores everything for a set period (which you can define)

Sorry Lee I was a bit vague there I meant that users log off to disconnect their session and then log back on instantly and the restrictions are not active. Does this apply with Impero?

Dont know about Impero but with AB Tutor you can define policies to be temporary or permanent so it doesnt matter if they log off when it's set to permanent.

I think when the release the new version of Impero, you will be able to set permanent/temporary policies. There was also some muttering about it being linked to GPO - but I'm not sure about that.
