Youtube - Media Students

Do your Media Students (or any students) have access to Youtube?

 

If so, what are their access rights to the sites (ie how have you set it up) and have you had any issues because of it?

None what so ever

No access except for specific videos, as requested by teachers.

 

However, we've had three teachers this week ask for student access to YT. Apparently English 'need' it to look for videos of speeches to analyse speech patterns and styles (what?) and PE 'need' it to to get clips of football. We've said no, but I predict them going to the SLT and the SLT siding with them.

I thought I'd ask on here.

 

I put a case forward to the NM, if A level media student have access, that would be about say 10% of the Sixth form. One student could set up an 18+ account and get onto videos they shouldn't. What if one student gives his log on to a younger brother/sister, then all fun will be had by the school.

 

I think and hope this is a non starter.

We have an agreement with youtube that we can download specific videos, but we have to notify them a week in advance and they give us a download link. Perhaps you can do the same?

We have a YouTube downloader deployed aswell so staff can download video directly into our home built version of phpmotion/YouTube.

 

Students can then view this

We run Smoothwall UTM1000 with group management templates using AD user groups so that we can allow access for different groups to various sites i.e. Youtube, facebook etc we will be drilling this down even further when we get round to it.

 

It is a very controlled access to Youtube in which all comments are inaccessible and anything dodgy is filtered out also.

 

Cannot speak any higher of the Smoothwall product.

That is actually illegal. Speak with youtube, you will find they are quite accomodating.

 

To date we have near 700 vids from them ranging from Martin Luther King Jr speech for PHSE to various olympic events for PE.

we have approached them and they have said its ok as long as we contact the relevant people for copyright stuff such as the c4 stuff

its basicly ok aslong as we don't download copyrighted stuff such as the music videos. I'll see if i can find the email from them

I use my lovely shiny Smoothwall to do this, blocked for students, bar students who are media students, during media studies lessons in media studies classrooms thus they can be assured of supervision should they be wasting time or looking at inappropriate videos that may slip through the net due to the poor tagging and info that Youtube provide for filtering Takes a bit of setting up but a great tool from the lovely Smoothwall team

All students have complete access to youtube or any other streaming website, we only filter on pornography, hacking/cracking, games, social media.

Basically what John said - SW locked to security groups and available at specific times only.

 

The additional threat of "mess about and you'll ruin it for everyone" seems to inspire sufficient peer pressure to discourage shenanigans.

 

We don't block youtube in school so much due to content (s' reasonably easy to filter) we block it due to bandwidth and class control issues.

Our media accounts have access. Safety mode is enforced across the site and the media classes have plenty of staff monitoring them, so not an issue.

we block youtube/facebook/twitter here for kids, i have surfcontrol at the moment, im hoping to get websence somepoint soon so i can do more granular filtering.

 

youtube is open for the teachers and support staff to use, facebook/twitter is aswell but we try to discorage its use during school time, been thinking of giving a time filter on it so its only open befor 8:45 and after 3:30, not got round to it yet

We allow our sixth form students and staff access to YouTube - this obviously includes our Media Studies students.
