I don't get the complaints about it. It looks cartoony. It isn't supposed to be super HD/crysis type graphics.

Looks fun to me anyway. Games to me aren't about graphics.

It's not specifically the graphics. It is the animation (very jerky scripted sequences) among other things. Levels dont seem to be well thought out, it plays like a poorer cousin of Serious Sam. Graphics may not be everything, but if you watch the NPC's walk away and you can clearly see the animation loop in their walk, then something isn't right. If you can also see jagged lines around their faces something still isn't right.

I wasn't expecting Crysis style graphics, I was expecting a game 14 odd years in the making to play well and not play as though it had been designed as an addon to DN3D.

It may look fun from the trailers etc, but trust me the idea of controlling "pi$$ing in a toilet" or "picking up a turd to throw about" soon get boring. Some games, like GTA, have replay value in the fact you can go around and discover things you haven't before. This doesn't to me.

One level for example is set in a strip club. It's mean to be while you are knocked out and imagine it. You have to find some food, a vibrator and a condom (that is the levels objective). You can go into the toilets and pi$$ as described, or wash your hands or dry them. You can also use the condom machine to get that item. In the main room you can watch the badly animated strippers. You can go to either the strippers changing room or staff room to put popcorn in a microwave and thats the second item. You can also look in the strippers locker for the vibrator. Once you have all three you go via the games room (you can play slot machines or pool) and into the champagne room for a lap dance...with a stripper who clearly has the half life style skin where the underwear is painted on the skin, so as she moves you can see the underwear part of the skin disappear into the leg part of the skin.

Duke then wakes up and thats it. Absolutely no replay value there, and unless watching a vibrator jump about on the floor is your thing, not really any humour or fun value there either.

As an addition, I have played through a few games where graphically it was fantastic, but the gameplay was rubbish. It was apparent the makers had spent all their time making it look nice in a hope it covered up the rubbish gameplay. Duke doesn't even have the saving grace of the graphics even though the gameplay is dire

I got it for £24 but I've had it on preorder from amazon for ages and they keep the price you order it at.

It's... ok as long as you go into it expecting an average game. If you go into it expecting an amazing game that justifies the past 14 years of development time then you'll be very disappointed.

Aye, I agree with that. It just seems so unpolished. Walk Duke up to a mirror and jump, it just looks so unnatural. Even if 3D realms hadn't done a great job of the animation that's no excuse for gearbox dropping the ball.

that review pretty much nails it. i have to disagree about the bit about shooting pregnant women, as it is kind of part of the plot (and as stated you can leave them to die anyway), but had this been in an Aliens game would have been bypassed as offensive.

The pic of the kid holding the autograph book is another classic example....you can sign his book by pressing a button and moving the mouse/controller to draw. it serves no purpose, it doesn't immerse you in anything or make you feel like you are actually writing, it was there as a cutscene which you have to do before you can move on.

I can't believe that now the game is out, the demo is still reserved for people who pre-ordered only! It makes no sense!!!!!! /CONFUSED!

That and the fact what is the point of a demo if you can't demo it without having to purchase something else to get some random code ??

I lost all faith in PC Gamer magazine when they gave Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising around 90 out of 100.

yup, they are all about coin and not about users/player, i cant get over the fact that the game itself says "its been coming for 12 years it better be good" but its not its utter tripe...hail to the king...my ar$e

thats even mentioned in the first part of the game.

you play a scene and kill a boss (from dn3d) and it zooms out to show duke was playing it on a console. two girls get up from kneeling between his legs (yes you can tell where that was going!) and say was the game good duke and he says "it should be, its been 12 years in the making"

Lol all I needed to see what the TV advert for the game. Looks even worse than an Original Xbox title. Seeing the amazing semi photo realistic stuff "real games developers" are doing with things like Battlefield 3 focuses the eye on how totally pathetic DNF appears to look.

Franky I dont care how it plays. I buy next gen games not several generations old games.

I wouldnt waste £40 odd on it and i feel very sorry for anyone who has been drawn into the hype!

Well I have played through most of the single player campaign on DNF for PC now and I have to say it is not a great game. However, IMO it really is not as bad as some have claimed on here. Don't get me wrong, this is not a AAA title by any means, but it is not an awful game, especially if you like DN3D. Edited by pshuttle

I played the demo on XBox Live, really really unimpressed. Felt like an indie title, not a big name 40 quid game!

I'd pay a tenner for it tops.

I see the demo is now openly available to all on Steam. I assume it's the same for other platforms.

1.7Gb. I won't be wasting my "unlimited" bandwidth on it...

It speaks volumes that I have left DNF halfway through the game (ironically enough DNF too!) and have loaded up GTA Vice City to play through again. And in all honesty, I see little difference in graphics and animation between the two, and gameplay on GTA is much much better

As a final post from me, even though I have not played it, and have no intention of playing with it, and will most likely never play it, I will award DNF the following score:

Just in case anyone was wondering what the best graphics card to play DNF was....

Xbit Labs - Contemporary Graphics Cards in Duke Nukem Forever

If you cannot afford expensive hardware, the choice of a graphics card for playing Duke Nukem Forever is obvious. Depending on your brand loyalty, you can choose either the AMD Radeon HD 5770 or the Nvidia GeForce GTX 550 Ti. Both can deliver 60 fps and more at the lowest of the tested resolutions. With some lowering of the graphics quality settings, these cards can also ensure a playable frame rate at 1920x1080. Oddly enough, the outdated engine of the game turns out to have very high system requirements.

If you want to run Duke Nukem Forever on a low-end graphics card, you will have to give up FSAA or FXAA as well as certain special effects. Even AMD’s latest product Radeon HD 6670 cannot cope with the game at the highest graphics quality settings.

The entry-level products find the modified Unreal Engine 2.5 rather difficult to run. You can only get a playable frame rate with a Radeon HD 5770 or a GeForce GTX 550 Ti. The latter’s rather high performance might be expected but the old Juniper-based card is quite a surprise.

Today’s graphics cards are quite good helpers on your mission of kicking aliens' ass. The GeForce GTX 580 is the best, beating the Radeon HD 6990 even. The game’s engine doesn’t work smoothly with multi-GPU solutions as yet. Neither the GeForce GTX 590 nor the mentioned Radeon HD 6990 can run it properly.

I run a 5770 and have absolutely no performance issues at 1680x1050 with *everything* up as high as it'll go.

Then again, I'm surprised the official requirements are not more along the lines of "33mhz processor, coprocessor and AdLib/Soundblaster compatible sound card"
