Alternatives to Backup Exec

We are moving to Windows Server 2008 R2 over the summer but only have BackupExec 10d which has always served us well. We now find that it wont work with 2008. We cant afford to upgrade to 12.5/2010 version. Does anyone know of any cheaper/free alternatives out there. I would prefer something that works with Tapes.

Not sure if it was yourself that mentioned that on edugeek on another thread but that seemed to be pretty good - any link(s) to the manufacturers website for this backup software / package ?

just been installing microsoft dpm 2010 software but its not friendly for single server environment as it will not easily install on domain control as i have found to my joy... am getting it sorted but...

Thanks - I looked at the wiki article but wanted some feedback on what people use out there. I will look at Yosemite and DPM but any other suggestions and experiences welcome.

You quoted my above post that was in relation to yosemite ( barracudaware ) not DPM, I've not used DPM but heard a lot of good things about it.

Its £12 a server so youhave 200 instances of sql, 40 sharepoint on on server and still £12 no random application licences

Yeah its for a large multiple server environment. If I had single domain I would use windows backup and scripting SQL if you had that or better yet I would VM the server up and backup the VM

I found DPM to be poor, I'm not surprised it's so cheap. Could not get it to work with our tape autoloader which was on the DPM compatible hardware list. I had to revert back to BE10 in the end, hope to go BE2010 in the summer.

Not sure if this was directed at me. In case it was...

 

The only thing it seems to be missing for me is VMware infrastructure, but for a third of the cost of BE2010, perhaps it's worth living without that functionality.

 

Admittedly DPM didn't have it either.

Using DPM 2010. It's alright, not the worst but certainly no where near the best. Main fault its got is a max of 64 backups when using HDs - wtf, so I can have 2 months of daily backups or a year of weekly backups, but not a combination of the 2*

 

* It can be achived but requires double the disk space, and when you have a few TBs of data... I thought the reason people are moving to HDs is because they are cheaper than tapes - well not when you need double.

I tried DPM before going back to Backup Exec 2010. We were in the same boat. We had moved over to 2008 R2 over the summer and needed a backup solution as backup exec was the last resort. I had tried all the above which have been mentioned plus a lot more but we backup to a NAS box rather than a tape and nothing apart from Backup Exec would backup to it so we had to buy new licences for backup exec as there was no upgrade path from 12 to 2010 and to be fair i haven't looked back.

 

Have you thought about looking at the windows server vackup tool. They have vastly improved it but it depends what you are wanting to backup.

CA's ArcServe is really nice and I am starting to enjoy it more now It works great with NAS and AutoLoaders and a lot cheaper than Symantec BackupExec

We're going with Veeam for the majority of our VMWare based backups, however to get the Veeam stuff to tape and to backup a few physical servers and some mac infrastructure we're looking to also use a Backup Exec 2010 R2 or CA ArcServe install

just finished installing dpm on my DC, which while it was a lot of hops to get it installed, seams to run well now.

 

we use old Backup exec for the 6tb san to the tape loader and will be using dpm to back the stuff up from the vmware servers running from the 3tb dell san.

How do we buy DPM 2010? Is it only available as part of System Center, or can it be bought separately?

 

This for an environment with just 2 servers, they only need scheduled file backup to NAS with automatic reusing of old media.

 

I'm trialling ARCserve, It'll do the job, but something simpler and cheaper would be better.

Scripted Windows Backup is probably just what I need for a small setup I look after. Could you provide any info or links on how to get it going?

 

I'd ideally need monthly and weekly full backups with daily incremental, all to NAS, overwriting old media when appropriate. Surely this could be done with Windows Backup, scheduled jobs and scripts.

Same here, Veeam for 30 days of rollbacks on disk then weekly archive to LTO-5 via Backup Exec

What problems did you have with it? My new physical server (which will be a DC) will be the machine backing up the VMs, and I want to try DPM 2010 first before paying a big chunk of cash for Backup Exec with the virtual hooks, so if there's any advice to give, please let me know!
