We're a school that loves throwing the latest and greatest around if possible...

 

Then leave metro...

 

Managing third party stuff through GPO is generally a bit of a nightmare unless the developer has allowed for it.

That's my plan, generally our staff are fairly accommodating, but there'll be a couple who complain.

 

I've been using the W8 RTM for a few days now, must admit the metro stuff isn't really that intrusive in daily usage, I only see it about once or twice a day.

We are pushing it as a dual boot option to a few of the users that are tech savvy to get the hype and jealousy up. Nothing makes teachers want something more than being told they can't have it yet but their tech able colleagues can. Even if they don't want it they suddenly do. Its one of the little tricks we play with all the new stuff, push early to a few key people who are liable to brag about it and by the time you are ready to push it globally the demand for it is already fever pitch.

Just tried Windows 8.

Without swearing, what can I say as to how much I hate it.

Not going to implement it any time soon. I will play with it a bit more.

Microsoft have really stuffed up in my opinion. I prefer Linux anyway. Windows 7 works well though.

my IBM model M doesn't have that key. I guess I'll have to miss this release. shame.

 

 

You will have to press Ctrl+Esc instead to get the desired effect.

that works ok for windows 7. but TBH W7 was a complete waste of time for me. I installed it because others on this forum suggested I would get better games performance from it over XP. I didn't.

I only use windows for steam. It boots up into steam and occasionally runs chrome for game howtos. I'll keep the productivity side of my life on linux and my model M :)

Get one of the Edugeek launch buttons but with Windows key mapped to it instead :)

I didn't really have a problem with Metro after I'd got stuff installed (windows 8 installed on my home machine for a week), but it's ultimately pointless on a desktop.

 

There is also this - Welcome to Classic Shell - Its something called Classic Shell that puts a start menu on Windows 8. I've got Windows8 with this installed on a VM Box at work.

I agree. If you are going to use a replacement Start Menu, at least use one that looks and functions like Windows 7's rather than the monstrosity that is XP's! :)

When I first started at my school, I found several Model M's laying around and they went straight in the bin! They were too big and clunky, too loud, too beige and had a useless AT connector. :)

If Microsoft offered the simple simple option of "use windows 7 start menu" in windows 8, I would have more than likely already deployed it across the board.

i agree with most of that.

 

i personally don't think the learning curve for end users is sufficiently steep for business and schools to have to stick with windows 7. if anything the start screen makes more sense as a desktop replacement. maybe i'm off base with that, but i don't see why a user would want or need a start menu if the things that they need to get to can be presented in a non-cluttered fashion on the start screen. Plus, if there's group policies to control what's presented then what's the big deal. The other aspects of Windows 8 that don't require a learning curve like the faster boot up times, the ribbon, the UI effects [or lack of] are a bonus over windows 7.

 

by and large i can see schools going for either iPad or some variant of a windows 8 slate. That commonality of interface on windows devices is really important, even if there's some adjustment when using keyboard/mouse rather than touch. It can't be that big of a deal for schools to do phased roll out windows 8 onto desktops if they're providing win8 or RT slates to staff and pupils.

late to the party here, I trialled it onto the wifes laptop (not brave enough for my main machine here yet), not sure what to make of it in all, its different, bit buggy (it is a pre sp1 os from M$ though), seems to be a bit like the gnome shell from Linux too me at least in parts, but I do like the look of it overall I think.

 

First impressions for me are that it has a learning curve alright, its a departure from previous versions of windows, I spent best part of an hour working out how to get the address bar up on demand in IE 10 :) #winning now and I actually like full screen browsing of the internet now.

 

I like it, but it needs to be worked on, think ill delay judgement until further down the line with it as things stand now.

 

Can see the problems of switching to it no end though from a professional pov, esp where I am working given the change.

I have JUST burnt win 8 pro and stuck it on a machine for users to play with see what they think... played a little game actually "Who can find the shutdown button quickest?" .... not many people could find it thats for sure... many struggled to actually get to the desktop.

 

I dont think I'll ever be rolling this out on my network...
