mortstar Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Currently my two tower servers are sat in the room in which I work, just on the desk and taking up a considerable amount of space. With new budgets in April I'm hoping to be able to buy another 2x servers. I've been looking at rack mountable 1U or 2U servers. The cabs we have at the moment won't take rack-mountable servers, so I need to buy a cabinet. Can anybody recommend a supplier/manufacturer of cabinets? I'd like the 2 tower cabinets that I have currently to be inside this cabinet as well. Is this mix of rack-mountable and free-standing server advisable? Thanks in advance Sam
wesleyw Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 It can be done whether it is the best option is a matter of opinion if you can get your tower servers a rack mount kit it would be neater and of course take up a lot less space, CCS Media has a lot of very reasonable cabinets from many vendors so I would try them out ask for Neil Ottewell on 01246 200 200 ext 1030. All you'll need for the towers at present is a shelf inside the cabinet. Wes

Had to take them all to pieces and dismantle the server room door to get them in though - 47u :-)
Ric_ Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I think that my 42u APC cab with side panels and metal doors was in the region of £500... that is with feet and everything too - plus wheels for the initial positioning! The head still likes to recall the story of the caretakers wondering how to get the cab up 5 stps into the schol and then I walked along with a spanner (supplied by APC I should add), unbolted it from the pallet and then proceeded to remove the side panels and doors... the sigh of relief by the caretakers was audible! I got them back by getting them to move the UPS (I took the 6 lead acid cells out first!)

A HP badge? It is a 47u too which can add considerably to the price compared to a 42u.

I've used a few other cabinets in the past, and find that some aren't really 1m deep (I have some rack components that are 1m from front to back). My old prism cabinet ended up with bent rails from the old apc mounts (no rails). The hp ones are very tough. I have a similary priced Dell rack too, although that was part of an order. The first one I had is actually branded as Compaq, and came with new compaq servers - I liked it so much I got a second. The price difference to a prism is only around £200. Can they hold 900Kg?

This is only really an issue with the big 1u/2u slimline servers though. Alternatively it gives you more room for power distribution and cabling.
