Media Player 11 = Fail!

Great, after finally allowing WMP11 to deploy via our WSUS server I find that most clients can't use it at all now. All they get is some silly message telling them to logoff and logon again.

 

Naturally this has no affect at all. So I'm stuck with hundreds of failed WMP11 installations!

 

As this was a WSUS install I can't roll it back, unless I manually visit each PC. I can't even force the re-deployment of WMP10 (created using the Enterprise deployment kit) so I'm not happy with MS right now!

 

Anyone else had this problem? WMP11 seems to be a complete non starter - I can't even force a re-install through WSUS.

One thing to double check is you disabled the welcome wizard/first run wizard as I *think* that can cause problems.

Can't you create a script which remove MP11 and then push deployment again?

Its the error that says to use Windows Media Player you must logoff and login again. Logging on and off makes no difference and this affects Admin users as well.

 

I can't really disable the first run wizard as its deployed from WSUS - you only really have the option to Approve the installation.

 

I'm trying to run a script to uninstall it by calling the spuninst.exe in the Windows folder - if that works it should roll back to WMP10. If it does work I think I'll leave WMP10 as the standard for XP and use VLC for media.

 

Major fail for WSUS and WMP11 as far as I can see - thats around 700 PCs affected by this!

Yes, had this as well, fortunatly only one teacher reported it so i manually rolled that back.

Can vouch for this, the first use wizard kills most version of WMPlayer for limited users, so kill it off in GPOs and that seems to fix most issues

Just checked and the machines GPOs disable the first run wizard.

 

Finally got the script to rollback working, it will take time to roll everyone back to 10.

 

I think I'll leave the XP machines at 10 - 11 obviously doesn't like our PCs for some reason. No errors to help me work on it either, which is frustrating

this has been a pain here too - it's something to do with a profile being created on a pc with a "problem" mediaplayer 11 on - once the profile is deleted and recreated it seems to work ok

We also get this on a sysprepped machine. Running the WMP installer on silent sorts it.

I've had to give up on WMP11 - even running the installer now tells me that its not suitable for this version of Windows!

 

So I've used a script to roll back to 10, and redeployed the WMP10 package I created using the enterprise deployment kit.

 

Not one single installation of WMP11 worked. What a pain this has been to sort out!

I've tried using the package from WSUS and also the direct download from MS.

 

I'm going to try a couple of manual installs now I've got WMP10 working again. Not using for WSUS for anything other than security/critical updates though!

We use WSUS in the same way. Any non-essential and hardware updates get done during the holidays.

I've never deployed MP11 via WSUS as it's quite big, along with the .NET Framework...

 

If you download the Logistix XP SP3 Update Pack, Media Player 11 is included in two parts. This bypasses the annoying activation and could be an alternative for you to deploy it to the network.

 

Alternatively, update your images and update your workstations over time this way.

 

It's been a long while I've used MP10, but to my knowledge it does everything MP11 and MP12 can.
