I think I've found a AV suite worse than Sophos....

.....It's called Kaspersky - it's worse than Sophos, It really is - it's terrible......I thought my AV woes were sorted but now I've changed jobs and it's back to badly written AV suites. Shocking, so many false positives I don't know where to start and an interface that's about as much use as a skirting board ladder.

@mattx:

Using Kaspersky here over the whole school and its working very well indeed, in fact its probably even better than our old AV which was very good over the 6 years that we used it.

You twisty old git hehe! ;D

Touching wood as I write this, we like MK-2 have never really had a problem with Sophos. It seems to run quite smoothly and updates the clients every hour.

AV is all terrible, Kaspersky detects everything, virus or not. Symantec detects almost nothing, NOD32 kills exchange and corrupts databases, Forefront Client Protection requires a datacenter running outdated OSs to run its server components. I have never uses Sophos but from the majority of reviews on here it is best avoided, CA ITM uses all the systems resources as quickly as it can to just run its own bloated interface and is a 50/50 gamble when it comes to protection, Mcafe I have not used for 5-6 years but unless they have throwen out what they had and started again I can't see it being much good.

We should probably just format all of our HDs now and save the virus writers the trouble given the state of computer security on all avalible platforms.

I like Kaspersky. It keeps telling me Windows 7 on my PC at home is a virus ;-)

sophos keeps doing that on my servers finding such things as robocopy (on 2008 so built in) as a virus and finding (randomly not always) smart board drivers as a virus on clients as it has a web server

I don't mind Forefront, its much nicer and lighter than Sophos, even if you do need a DataCentre to run it all now (or just do as I am doing stick with the last generation as its working fine and will be for a good period of time until MS do the Light version of SCCM for it which I read somewhere is on the cards.

For home users and other areas who don't want a MS product, Avast is a great tool and reasonably well priced for Education.

We had kaspersky for a year, hated every last minute of it and couldnt wait to get back on NOD. Even the home version is pants - it kept blocking all internet videos, so no youtube, iplayer, etc unless it was turned off, great

I can honestly say I would have just preferred to have a virus, they do less damage!

They do all seem dire. I've used Sophos, Symantec and CA eTrust ITM in corporate/education environments now and all 3 have issues:

Sophos - resource hungry, had a habit of 'detecting' viruses and then just letting them install themselves

Symantec - resource hungry is an understatement - installing it on a machine made me feel like I was now working on a 486.

CA - Isn't 100% at getting the very latest in viruses (seems to be about a day or so behind the leaders), no safe mode interface due to the way they use a web server to run the interface, the 'call home' aspect for use with the management server seems to work in so much as it gets policies, but the server interface never reflects the real state of the network.

Wait till you have to work with Mcaffe!

it's awful but it only costs us 50 quid per year!

Mcafee ;)

We use this here and had no trouble, actually I lie there 8.5 was pathetic and did eat a lot of processor/memory. Since upgrading to 8.7i which I have just been dishing out with Epolicy Orchestrator I have a much better system.

Only wish it could detect all the new trojans/junk crap appearing on sites.

Interesting to see this many replies to the thread and AVG not mentioned once. Does that mean no-one uses it or that people use/used it and have no strong opinion of it either way? We use it here and have no problems with it, but then I don't really have anything to benchmark it against as the only other time I've had to administer AV was 12 years ago.

I have used Kaspersky for some 3-4 years now, and I have to say i really like it.

It's versatility in what it can do is what impresses me. It has so many customiseable options for it, and the best point for me has been Kaspersky support. I've rung up kaspersky about the most silly of things, some of it not even related to their AV, and the first person i've spoken to has known what I'm talking about, and fixed the problem immediately.

I've also reported new strains of viruses before, sent them the info while on the phone to them, and then had an email back within 1-2 hours saying "push out an update now" and they've uploaded the new virus definitions worldwide with the new strain.

I've had a couple of niggly troubles with kaspersky, they've had some bugs, but they've always either advised a workaround as a temporary fix, or fixed the problem for us. Password protection options for enabling/disabling features, ability to control what different groups/users can/cannot access, multiple update sources, migration tools for the admin kit, network scanning and agent systems for tracking machines with/without AV or missing updates....

Had Sophos here before, and it didn't update properly, it could be switched off with one button click, it didn't pickup the most basic of viruses, it slowed the machines down heavily, and the admin kit borked and couldn't recover it.

I've also tried symantec suite, and that didn't have the customisability, was even worse for machine resource hogging, and the server version of it could be uninstalled with a single click without even a reboot! Newer versions are better I have no doubt and come with the new features, but over the years kaspersky has proved the best allround AV package.

No way is Kaspersky worse than Sophos!

Sophos was incapable of...

- updating a machine without slowing it to a crawl

- scheduling updates to run at a specified time

- telling me what action it had taken if it found a virus

- telling me which virus a machine actually had, it only managed "virus detected!"

- telling me if the computer was clean afterwards

- remotely initiating a scan

- blocking spam emails with porn in the message (spam score 10% reaaallly)

- staying online for more than 2 weeks at a time without trashing Exchange services (Puremessage)

I had online exams that nearly got cancelled due to Sophos trashing the machines, was so relieved when we dropped it for KAV. Not sure if Sophos still have the dialog box that says default action when finding a virus "do nothing". Apparently it actually means something different but always found it quite a funny option seeing as that's what Sophos tended to do anyway!

Have to admit Kaspersky hasn't been without issues...

- we evaluated the MP3 release at the time, they then brought out MP4 which was awful until they brought out a fix for it

- some updates bring new bugs (Outlook has been a recent victim)

- Proactive Defense is useless and has shedloads of false positives, solution... turn it off :p

However the management console is spot on, tells me what I need to know and deploys fine. Chances are I'll stick with it as MS Forefront is the only alternative but I'm not convinced about my AV using Windows Update as it's the first thing that any virus \ worm worth its salt will disable...

How long ago did you use Sophos?

I've always found Sophos to be okay, never had any problems.

Now Symantec Anti-Virus (corporate edition, not home!) USED to be a good product until it all changed to SEP! (EndPoint)...............

We dropped it in 2008 or 2009. I liked being told that visiting a machine manually was the only way to view its logs at the time, sounds like the performance hasn't changed although I'd hope the management might be better than it was back then?
