Guest Guest Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 I've waited for months for the new intel SSDs to arrive and by the looks of them it wasn't worth the wait. So which would you go with and why? Budget wise I'm looking at around £170 for a 120gb Cheers

I know I haven't exactly been specific in my question, but then that was intentional; I've read tonnes of reviews, various different benchmarks, all drawing different conclusions. As far as I can see IOPs will be more beneficial than throughput as I will be opening lots of small files... The 2 I've been looking at are the Vertex 2/2E/3 series, and the Crucial M300. Any opinions?

EDIT: just read something that the early crucial C400s won't be the "ones to wait for" so the vertex 3 is the only real choice if you want to buy in the next couple of weeks i think EDIT: the only intel drives released so far is the 510 series, and they aren't impressive at all, the "good" ones aren't out for a couple more months Edited March 30, 2011 by mrbios

pcstru Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 I've an OCZ vertex (120G on a desktop) and a few Kingston SSD's (60G on desktop and a 120G on a laptop). Without running detailed performance stats I couldn't tell them apart in normal use, but with any of them the difference between that and an HD is quite marked. That said, unless you have bucket loads of cash to spend, the capacities tend to keep you disciplined about what you allow on the SSD and what you install onto cheap HD - and that tends to mean the biggest single noticeable difference is the system boot time. I have had some file corruption on the OCZ but I couldn't definitely say that was down to the drive rather than the OS (windows 7 on that box).

It seems that the consensus is they are very much evolutionary rather than revolutionary.

Ahh appears you are correct, i've just spotted them was hoping for good things after my experiences with the X25-M 80GB

mac_shinobi Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 (edited) memoryc are doing OWC SSD's not sure how they compare - only reason I am looking at these as seen good reviews on a few mac sites on the OWC Drives and also because of having a mac pro 2008 model, I only have SATA 2, not SATA 6 gbps - was looking around for PCI Express cards that would give me 6gbps but I couldn't do that and can't bond 2 sata ports either so not sure how to get the bandwidth I need for a 6gbps SSD. TBH I'm not that bothered about max theoretical read throughput. A good balance between IOPs, and write and read, and I'll be happy. The main reasons I want it is for the usual startup and app load times, but also to stick music samples on (<1mb each) for when I'm doing music production. I do hate the guy who mentioned the Vertex 3 though - it looks very tasty and I had previously discounted it from the running because of the price. I've got a £50 cpu cooler in the shopping basket so it's starting to add up! Edited March 30, 2011 by Guest

Does your Samsung Q1 currently have a 1.8" 4,200rpm PATA HDD in it? If so, your options are very limited if you want to upgrade it with an SSD. The only decent 1.8" PATA SSD is the PhotoFast 1.8" GMonster-50 IDE V4 assuming your Q1 has a 50-pin PATA connector? The 128GB model costs £397 (or £350 from eBay). Edit. They're considerably cheaper than the Vector Vertex range, but is there also a significant difference in performance I wonder?
