Do you know of any software / freeware or method of enabling the teachers to reset the pupils network passwords without giving them access to the server. I do not really want to give them access to the server to reset pupil passwords via AD if there is a simple interface or method of doing it without.

themightymrp Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 We created a custom MMC and deligated rights in Active Directory. Easy, Quick & Free. You just need to make sure you have the management tools installed on the client machine. This is exactly what we did. Nice and simple and as you say, free!

But I'm quite sure it won't work cross domain. I can get the ldap searches to work but it won't reset the password, complains it can't find the object. the mmc option is good, I have that working in our library. But they have had specific training on how to search for accounts etc, I'm not going to train our academic staff to use the mmc, not with the amount of accounts we have in there.... Mind you, now I have them all in one OU it might just work hmmm

cpjitservices Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 best thing we ever did was give rights to tutors to change passwords - all tutors have a shortcut on the desktop to the app to change them. We use : http://www.wisesoft.co.uk/software/passwordcontrol/default.aspx It's free and easy and changes a password in a click of a button.

Go to an XP Station and make sure the Server admin tools pack is installed. 2. click start, then run, and type mmc 3. File, Add Remove Snap in 4. Click Add 5. Select Active Directory Computers and Users 6. Click Add 7. Click OK 8. You will then have the normal Active Directory user/computer manager, go to the root OU where your pupils are stored. 9. Right Click on the OU and select new window from here 10. Close the other window from the root of the domain as we do not need that. 11. Click View then "New taskpad view" 12. Select Horazontal List as style 13. Click Next and Next again giving the view what ever names you want. 14. Do not run the next wizard. 15. Highlight a user account, then go Action, Edit Task Pad View, then click on the tasks tab. 16. Click NEW then menu command, and then select Reset Password on the right hand pane. Click next, give it an icon. Click Finish close the boxes. Now when you click a user you get the reset password icon appear. 17. Now just do a tidy up, get the view as you want it, click file options give it a name, icon for the console, save the console and create a shortcut to it on a shared drive and as along as the admin tools are install on the station it will work. One quick question however, is there a way to removed all other AD permissions and just leave reset password. Currently if i right click on a user i get the option to delete etc.

Marci Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Alternatively, do it in PHP on the webserver. We have a full web-based gui with autocomplete that runs from PHP using the adldap class to allow staff to reset passwords. ( adLDAP - LDAP Authentication with PHP for Active Directory ) Has the bonus of being able to work over mobile devices / Mac / PC / any device with web access.
