edutech4schools Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Root is a more long term hardcore way of accessing the phones OS. You might need to wipe your phone if you root it. A softmod is just an app running on your phone that unlocks it at the click of an icon or reverts it back.

Its a five minute job at most. You really should take the plunge and upgrade to 2.2, your phone will operate so much better.

That's reminded me of a good point actually... @sted: where are you getting the info that Samsung will release an update in the next month? If it's actually Samsung releasing it, you can add at least another month to that while your network provider adds their crud to it, if they release it at all...

Because non "stock" ROMs' seem to have less rubbish on them, and are actually smoother. I've had G'bread on my GT540 for about 6-8 weeks.....Best thing I've done to it. Also, the chances of actually "bricking" your phone are pretty slim. You may get a boot loop, or some other such problem, but completely bricking it is very difficult! (That's only MY opinion, and I do not wish to be held responsible for someone trying a ROM AND bricking their phone!!!)

You may get a boot loop, or some other such problem, but completely bricking it is very difficult! I agree, but with a slight caveat that the end user takes the necessary precautions (such as a fully charged battery; I plug mine in as well, just in case) and that it's a well tested ROM. The only two ways I could see it actually bricking your phone is if there was a sudden loss of power while you're flashing the boot sector (hence the fully charged battery) or you were using an experimental ROM that overloaded a component, causing it to break (as has been known to happen when keeping the LED torch on for too long, regardless of ROM)

sted Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 well i got bored and flashed it to 2.3 earlier and apart from it not wanting to install angry birds(fixed) and after redoing looking at address book and assuming names had numbers not just e-mail but after a few mins exporting from oytlook im back up and running and it does seem faster now. All i need is to remember where i put my backdrop lol gps is still about as much use as a chocolate teapot though lol

I'm finding if I run up GPS Status app, wait till aqquires 5 sats and then close it and open up my own GPS speed app it them works OK. But sometimes I need to open/close GPS status itself a few times If you want reliable, then 2.2 ROMs are still the way to go (or maybe older Gingerbread versions that didn't seem to have the problem) regards Simon

ben604 Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 It's the standard OTA update. No custom ROM. I read they still hadn't addressed the proxy issue somewhere, so it's a bit of a surprise...My Android version is 2.3.3, HTC Sense version is 2.1.
