Recommend Server O/S for old hardware

Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Server Edition will run quite happily. It might be a little slow though.

Was gonna try that - but really want something ultra lean - is that possible?

 

- and is there a distro that comes pre rolled with LAMP with such requirements? I did a quick Google but the recommendation was from 2002 so figured there must be something more up to date.

Yeah, Ubuntu will be fine if you don't have a GUI running.

Yes, if you use the server install CD rather than the desktop or alternate CD you will end up with just a basic system with hardly anything on.

 

There's also a 'LAMP' install option if that's what you want and you want to save some time and effort.

You can't get much leaner than DSL ( http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/ ), it doesn't have a LAMP server, but you could always apt-get it.

Although I'd probably go with everyone else and use Ubuntu.

I wouldn't go for DSL for a server due to it's slightly odd setup.

 

I would say an Ubunutu 6.06 LTS Lamp install will run happily on that. Or if you want to try something more 'pure' you could try debian and do it yourself.

FreeBSD FTW or if you aren't as massocistic as me, debian

 

or ubuntu for an easier time.

Depends if you use 'testing' Hopefully 'Etch' will be out soon.

One mans bloat is another mans CD burning app. Anyhow, just do a server install. You get a bare bones system that way.

if you find ubuntu slow, you might find gentoo much faster, however expect a few hours to build the kernal

I have tried Gentoo believe it or not didn't have the patience to actually get it running!!!

 

Kedit - it works just like notepad!! lol ...damn vi/ pico - have to read the docs every time I use those!

 

FreeBSD - yeah - I hear a spelling mistake in the manual necessitates a major bug release. Put in onto an old Sunspark off Ebay for a truly bombproof experience!

 

..oh yeah Installed Ubuntu Server using the LAMP setup - just gotta work out how to get at it now - 'connection refused' from WinSCP3 and Putty
