I did wonder if I should put "Mangle Networks" for the second part...

Can they not join the dots?
No. For two reasons. If they did, they would be accused of "Big Brother" tactics. And secondly, they would employ EDS to implement it; and we know how that would pan out don't we?

Please, again, no Jedis! If you don't believe, SAY SO.

I think it is a giant waste of money.

why do they need me to fill in a form saying where I live, who I live with and my occupation. They have all details from council tax, Inland Revenue, medical records etc etc.

Can they not join the dots?

because to the best of my knowledge govenment systems arnt tied together so council has your infor for/from council tax dosent mean say the dvla have the same info separate systems (probably incompatible and we know how good government is at it projects so i wouldnt expect a joined up system anytime soon)

I was surprised that it only asked for first and last name and not middle names, which would surely be of help to future genealogists to know they've got the right person?

I agree on all counts... 34 characters each for job title and job description is too short

I also discovered that Line 1 of Employer's address was being truncated at 16 characters which isn't enough for my school's address which requires 19 characters and that's if I typed Rd instead of Road... why couldn't it work the address out from the postcode and house-number/name?

As for middle names, from a genealogy POV they would be useful, but how many do you allow people to enter? Middle initials would be just as useful. At least you enter a full date of birth now which is very useful if you've ever tried to put a family tree together!

To do the postcode/house number/name bit, they'd've had to buy a license from Royal Mail to do that, and for that scale of system, it isn't cheap.

Isn't the Royal Mail a government owned limited company, surely they could persuade them to have the licence for free if they own it....!

Doesn't work like that... Nothing in government works like that.

Some definite flaws in some questions - the questions about employment really aren't geared up to people who have retired. My parents had to say that they didn't work last week but would have been able to do had they been offered work!

Also, the languages spoken bit doesn't cater very well for children who are too young to talk.

When I requested an individual questionnaire it matched postcodes.

Well I have missed the boat on the rest of this conversation!

But to follow up, the point is that this is all about grouping people. If you were told to line up in a hall based on the answers to these questions, we'd all be 'up in arms'. So the point that you can put what you want and feel is right is about personal freedoms.

Oh and it remains to be seen if the answers have direct implications as to planning and budget allocation... more accurately it is used to see where money is not required rather than where it is. Any form of improvement project or scheme is reassessed independantly, not solely based on these figures.

Ensure enough people have put Jedi as their religion and request the council look into building a place of worship.

If they refuse... Claim discrimination. [if Scientology is a religion, so if Jedism.]

The council doesn't build synagogues, churches or mosques... why build a place of worship for jedi? Denying planning permission might be more dodgy.

The job title/description seemed largely pointless (although not as pointless as asking whether we have gas or electric central heating!). Job titles are often meaningless (my all-time favourite being someone I met at BETT whose badge said "thinker"!), and free-form text fields filled out by 40m people will probably generate so much variation as to be impossible to identify people with different titles but the same job, or the same title but different jobs/responsibilities.

My wife's Scottish and she ticked the box that she speaks English 'very well'...........

Aren't you only supposed to tick a box for how well you speak English if you've already ticked a box to say it's not your first language?

How tempting to put in a planning application for one and see who objects...

although if I build a death star next to the spinniker tower, I think a few eyebrows might raise...

You have seen the CG video of various bits of the Empire's war kit flying around contemporary California? If I had a Death Star, I wouldn't fly it down the A3...

No, but you could guarentee if people had them, they would still park them right in the middle of my street with their hazards on while they unload the shopping...

Another point raised by respondents was the lack of space to disclose a middle name. Prior to 2011, the 10-year census used to be an important resource for people tracing their family history and researching genealogy.

Now, for confidentiality reasons, ONS has said that they will not share your personal information with any other government department or organisation. The information you provide is only used for statistical purposes and names are not used in any published statistics from the census. The questionnaire only asks for first and last names to help ensure everyone is included.

Yahoo news

So the data won't be used for tracing family history this time?
