I'm on 13k full time 5 weeks holiday 8 statitury,

 

Above me is NM and Assistant NM. I'm a Technician.

 

1800 kids w/ 6th form

 

11 Servers, 450 machines, 48 laptops, 100+ staff laptops and a bizillion printers.

 

I feel slightly underpaid.... asked for a payrise but to no avai, so looking for a new job. roll on managed sservic I say ;-P

 

move to yorkshire and earn a good chunk more... still on the hunt for CVs!

The Technical Competencies test available from here.

 

 

This gives you a chance to evaluate your job / roles and see which of 4 levels you are. There are no salaries set against these levels but it is good to put certain aspects of your job in comparison to others.

 

It does fail to cover certain areas that you may do as extra (training parents, coding, reports, etc) but it covers the bulk of technical and managerial roles.

 

Well, level 4 in planet becta is a real barrel of fun isn't it ?

Seeing as this thread was started in 2005 i fancy that straw poll is a bit redundant unless most of the voting has taken place recently. As inflation would have improved the salaries and move people up a notch into one of the other salary groups.

 

I would say the majority are now in the 20-25k range, although the high turnover of IT staff traditionally means that there will also be a lot in the low bands between 13-17k....no change there. And ofcourse there's a fair few in the higher bands, those who've stuck it out years and have progressed to senior ICT status.

 

It's interesing micro view of the macro situation as regard salaries generally in our economy. One things for sure asset inflation has been totally out of whack with what most people earn.

Joys: that means I'm now in the below "low" band That's progress for you. (I routinely do tasks at C/D level compentancies according to the BECTA framework.)

I work 2.5 days a week (doing a foundation degree the other half) and am on £575 a month (13k if i was full time), theres only me and the network manager (not for long as, he's bieng redundant). We have about 800 students and 300 machines.

 

I was brought in to cover someone off sick, now hes been back for bout 4 months and they've kept me, Its complicated but basically he's taking on a teaching assistant role so its just me that does all the hardware and software.

 

I had no experience before i stated the job but have learned quickly and can keep everything running even on 2.5 days a week. I still think im underpaid tho! im not going to get a pay rise as the school is in deficit.

300 machines, NM being made redundant, techie back off sick leave now becoming a teaching assitant (WTF??), and you looking after those 300 machines only 2.5 days a week.

 

To top it off the school is in deficit, so they'll probably try and squeeze as much as they can out of you from that half a week your at the school. God knows who or what they'll replace the NM with.

 

What foundation degree are you doing out of interest ? Must be nice for you to have the break from study/work in the week like that. I'd fancy doing something similar myself if it weren't for the loss of pay.

I'd love to go into who they think there going to replace the network manger with but I don't think its really appropriate to comment on an open forum before its been finialised etc, but its maddness.

 

I'm doing a Foundation degree in enterprise computing, at south cheshire college (its an MMU course). it consists of Databases, programming (java), Info systems for Orgs, web and multimedia, computer platforms (maths theory and hardware), and networking this year. Its a good course and a great college.

 

get on it if you can find the time its worth it, our college are flexible so you can do one day a week and complete the course over 4 yrs instead of 2. Theres an optional 3rd year at MMU for honours but that will be full time.
